I don't know if there is a "better" surgery. There tends to be more overal weight loss with RNY than with lapband ... and I think the Duodenal Switch has the greatest rate of overall weight loss, but I could be wrong on this. Another consideration is which procedure does your insurance cover? Mine only covers RNY (gastric bypass), so the choice for me was relatively easy.

One statistic I've heard for years is that at three years out, the average Band and Bypass patients are at about the same amount/percentage of weight lost/kept off. FWIW.

I think all WLS are a personal decision between you and your Dr. to decide which would work best for your lifestyle, health, food issues, etc... I would suggest reading different peoples profiles, going to a few meetings and talking to people who have had each surgery, talking to your Dr. and reading about the pros and cons of each surgery. If you go to the home page of OH under learn about WLS click on WLS procedures and you'll be able to read about the different WLS. LOL Jen

Lapbanding works due to restriction, only. Bypass works by restricting food intake and malabsorption of what is eaten. I have read that Bypass is more sucessful, statistically, due to the above. NIH endorses RNY GB and many insurance companies will approve this surgery, but not the Lapband. Since I have lost over 100 pounds twice in my life and then gained it back, I chose the bypass for the malabsorption benefits in addition to the restriction.

They both stretch a little after time. The only difference is the lab band is reversable, the bypass is not.

the DS is the statistical better choice all around, but it is also the hardest to get, most insurance companies exclude it. but many choose to self pay even though they can have a free rny. come to the ds forum and ask about it

Well, I am going to through my statistic out in the arena. I found this in Dr Terry Simpson's book; he is a bariatric surgeon in the southwest of the US. His chart says that at 5 years out the percentage of weight loss between the two groups, RNY and LapBand is the same 50-75%. DS/BPD comes in at >75%. This is on page 1-56 of his book titled, Weight loss surgery, A lighter Look ...at a heavy subject". You can purchase his book on this site in the store. I think that the BEST surgery is what is the best for each different patient. And this is for the patient and the surgeon to decide with their individual body makeup. And do not forget, some surgeons are not trained in the LapBand, some only do RNY.
