Question:
I have only lost 65 lbs in 4 months, what am I doing wrong?

I am 4 mns post op (open rny). I have only lost 65 lbs and am very discouraged. I started out over 300lbs. You would think that I would have lost more by now. Can someone tell me if this is normal or am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions are welcome!! Thankyou    — Kelly W. (posted on August 24, 2001)

That is a great loss.. my gosh that would break down to be 16.25 lbs a month. Just keep up the good work.. make sure you are getting your water, protein and eating like you are supposed to. Exercise and work on speeding up your metabolism and you may be able to do better.. but quite frankly I would be delighted. I can't lose that kind of weight on my won I know that for sure.

Don't get discouraged!! I haven't had surgery (yet!), but my friend who had her surgery in April has been losing 4-5 pounds a week on average. Sounds like you're doing fine! Keep up the good work!

Hey, you are doing great! I am 5 months out and have lost 66 lbs (starting at 276), I feel like I am alittle slower than some, but it is still coming off at a nice pace. A slower loss means less stress on your gallbladder, skin and clothes budget! It is hard to be patient, put your scales away for a while if you look too often. FOcus on the things that you have gained while you have lost the weight - can you fit into old clothes you loved? Cross your legs, get up off the floor, take in a belt or sandals? Lower BP or sugars, aching feet?

I have to laugh at this question. I wonder "Have you lost your mind too?" My gosh that much weight in so little time!! Before your surgery you would have swooned over that! Feel grateful - you've done brilliantly!

I'm preop...5'2, 267 lbs; I would be thrilled to lose 65 pounds in 4 months! Have you ever lost that much so quickly before? If you are at all like me, probably not. I personally think you are doing great. My plan and I hope I can stick with it once I'm post op is to try and NOT compare my losses with those of others. There will always be people who lose at faster or slower speeds, so why get all worried about numbers. From what Ive learned at this site, if you stick to your doctor's instructions or at least eat in a healthy manner and get your water in, you don't have to be concerned with numbers, they'll take care of themselves. Congrats and keep up the good work. Be proud!

Hi Kelly, Your doing absolutely nothing wrong. Sounds to me that your doing a great job. Before this surgery you would have struggled, like all of us, to lose any weight. I had surgery in April and I've lost a total of 70lbs (started out at 253lbs) I personally feel better then I've ever felt before! Give it time..I hear the slower we lose the better. Keep it up..your doing great! *S* Take care and good luck with everything!

Kelly I think you are right on target. I too am 4 months post op, started at 290, and down 75lbs. I have hit a plateau the last 2 weeks. I have 2 friends how had the surgery the same week as me, and they are both down 65lbs. You are doing wonderful !! To increase your weight loss, increase your protein, water intake, exercise, and cut down on your carbs. Good LUck

65 lbs in 4 months?? That is great!! You have to ask yourself, could you have done that before the surgery? I think what you may be doing is comparing yourself to others that have had the surgery. If everyone would just realized that we are not clones, that we are individuals, that have different metabolisms, different surgeons, and different diets, we would not question the weight loss in what amount of time.

Don't be ridiculous! That is wonderful! I never lost that much in 4 months! DO NOT make weight loss goals - I tell people this all the time. You cannot make yourself lose fast - your body will drop the weight however it darn well pleases. You should, however, make attainable goals like: I will drink all my water today, I will exercise today, I will get in my protein requirements today. This is something you CAN control and you will not suffer disappointment. Weight loss goals only lead to disappointment and disappointment will lead to eating the wrong foods (am I right?) Work the plan and the plan will work (I know, I am repeating myself again).

I am 4 months post op lap/rny and have also lost 65 lbs. I started at 5'5", 251 BMI of 42. I could not be happier. I know that this weight, for once in my life, will be gone forever. Don't forget that amazing fact. You're doing just fine. Make your weight loss a journey and not a destination and enjoy everyday for each of your successes. Keep up the great work.
