Question:
Does Prozac Inhibit Post-Op Weight Loss?

I take large daily doses of Prozac (100 mg) and Wellbutrin (300 mg). I've been at this level for over 5 years, and it keeps my depression in full remission. However, I think it's also contributed to my inability to lose weight. Has anyone found that heavy usage of antidepressants affected their post-op weight loss? I'm scheduled for 1/3/02 Lap RNY.    — Kathy J. (posted on July 11, 2001)

I'm on Welbutrin and so far so good for me. It sure kills the sex drive, but does'nt seem to bother weight loss... yet.

I am also on a large dose of prozac but not welbutrin. I hope someone has an answer, because I was thinking of chnaging meds. I have been on Prozac for ten years, living a wonderful normal life, except for the weight.

Hi, Prozac was originally marketed as a weight loss drug, so I'm sure that's not causing weight gain. Don't know about Wellbutrin, though. You should request a pamphlet from your pharmacist the next time you get your Wellbutrin refilled that shows the side effects of Wellbutrin. The drug company will list weight gain, if it is a side effect. Hugs, Joy

I take both Prozac and Welbutrin. I am pre-op. My major weight gain CAME from Lithium Carbonate before they figured out that Prozac would be more appropriate. I was excited to get the Prozac because they said it would help with weight loss, but it does not cause loss in everyone and there are those who have GAINED on it. I both gained weight on it and lost sex drive with Welbutrin. UGH! Is fatter and no sex drive better than depressed and suicidal...you bet. Is it fun? No. My depression is mostly gone all that is left is the nagging self-image issues related to OBESITY. I am pre-op and have wondered about getting psych approval because of my meds. I think I have gained all I will from meds after taking them for 5 years. It may affect my weight loss post op, but it won't stop it. I will probably have to find liquid forms of the meds as welbutrin is not crushable. I have chosen the BPD/DS procedure and it's too strong to fail due to some meds. At least that is what I believe.

I'm the one who posted this question. The issue that I was referring to is recent and preliminary evidence that my psychiatrist discussed with me that very large doses of anti-depressants, like prozac, MAY be related to weight gain in the long run for some people. I think this has been a factor for me, and I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience either before or after surgery. Prozac saved my life, but it also has its side effects.

I have been on 100 mg of Zoloft/daily for over five years. My surgeon tells me that over 50% of his patients are on antidepressents before surgery - but that MANY of them no longer require them after surgery!! I am hopeful that I am one of those folks! Beyond it being an emotional thing - the weight - I think there may be something about the hormones captured and held hostage by all the fat cells! Anyway, I would ask doc his opinion.
