Question:
Is this good or bad?

Hi everyone. Today, I'm 3 weeks post-op and have lost only 36 pounds. Is this good or bad? I have been exercising 5 days a week by walking on a treadmill. I'm doing a mile. I feel discoureged. How do I get the weight off faster???? thanks!    — [Anonymous] (posted on June 28, 2000)

You're doing absolutely great.. Keep up the good work.. Each pound lost is a pound closer to your goal no matter if 30 pounds a month or 10 pounds a month it all adds up..

Hello. 36 pounds in 3 weeks is an average of 12 pounds per week. That is as good as it gets, be grateful. You're probably trying really hard and that is the reward. Keep up the good work and stop thinking that an excellent weight-loss like that is inadequate because it certainly is not, it is very good.

I was three weeks post-op as of yesterday and am down 24 pounds so I think you're doing terrific! And I feel pretty darn great about my weight loss, too. Take care and keep up the good work!

This is a joke, Candace, right? Of course you know that 12 pounds a week is an incredible weight loss...just look at the math. 1 pound is equal to 3500 calories, so to lose 12 pounds in one week you have had to deficit 42,000 calories. (or not absorb them if you were a distal0, or increase your exercise the equivalent of running 420 miles a week...either way, it is an impressive amount. I have never managed to lose more than 2 pounds a week, even on a liquid fast...so...yeah...I'd be happy with 12 pounds a week. I'd be ecstatic. At this rate you could lose 624 pounds a year! Not good enough? lol

I don't understand why you expecting to lose more weight faster than you are. It didn't take you three weeks to put on the weight, It is definely isn't going to take you three weeks to take off the weight. You are doing terrific. if you feel this way now how are you going to feel when you hit a plateau and not lose any for a while?

Come on, guys, cut him/her some slack! You're right on target in my opinion, but I can understand your frustration. I had lost 40 lbs. by 4 weeks post-op then hit a plateau for 3 weeks! During that time I was having trouble with eating, so I was really frustrated and discouraged that I hadn't lost an ounce in 3 weeks and was hardly taking anything in. What has been recommended to me is to increase protein, water, and exercise. I just broke the plateau and lost another 5 as of yesterday. I'm taking these suggestions and we'll see what next Tuesday brings on the scales. Best wishes to you!

When I read your questions I seriously thought you were joking! But just to clear the air... YES!!! YOU ARE DOING WONDERFUL!!! I had an open/Distal/RNY October 14, 1999; I weighed 400lbs then.. I currently weigh 245lbs!! I have lost 155lbs so far... I wondered if I was doing a good enough job in the beginning as well... although I was not walking no mile after just 3 weeks... I was barely getting back to work at that point. Don't over do it... working out is good... I work oout three/four times a week... plus all the outside stuff I am doing. You are doing wonderfully and don't question your loss... everyone does differently; and loses their weight differently. You need to realize this is only the beginning... you have many months ahead of you, and there will be plateau's but you will get over them.

36 pounds in three weeks is phenomenal!!! If you lost it any faster chunks of your body would be falling off behind you!!! i only lost 24 in the first four weeks. I still lost one hundred the first five months. Every one has a different metabolism. Keep up the outstanding effort!!
