Question:
What type of broth (beef/chicken) is the best to buy??

I am afraid that the broth I bought is not right. Although it is lofat, I am having a hayday with stomach rumbles... Please let me know what type of broth the rest of you ate and how it worked.... THANKS    — Mary B. (posted on December 18, 1999)

I think it is a matter of personal preference. I preferred the canned broth to bullion. I bought both flavors and really enjoyed the chicken but didn't care for the beef. On my first weeks out broth was a treat cause I could drink the whole can slowly like a big beverage. It tasted better to me than water and only had about 35 calories to the can. All that rumbling if not painful could just be the broth going from your pouch through the tiny anatomosis to your intestines.

Hi Mary, I buy the HerbOx very low sodium broth. It comes in a box with little packets. I bought the chicken and beef. when I make soup for myself I just make 1 packet and add whatever I want to the soup. I can't eat a whole cup anyway if I add something to it as I get to full but, alone It's great to sip on. It also comes in regular sodium but, I don't know if you have high blood pressure or not and this is the only one that I have found so far that has low sodium. Good luck.

At first you will notice that your stomach makes a lot of noise. This will stop. I am sure what you have purchased will be fine.

TRY RAMEN NOODLES--BEEF OR CHICKEN FLAVORED. IF YOU CAN'T TOLERATE THE NOODLES YET JUST STRAIN THEM OUT. THE BROTH IS REALLY GOOD, THOUGH. DIANE HARRIS

Just throw every kind of vegetable in a pot with chicken or beef cook it for 4 hrs and strain, this is easy and WAY more nutritious than anything you can get in a can. The rumbles are normal and go away in time.

I am having surgery in two weeks and I am trying to gather information on what to eat/drink after surgery. I was wondering if you can cook a can of Campbell's Chunky Chicken Noodle soup and drain off all the noodles and veggies and just drink the broth? Is that considered "broth" or will I not be able to tolerate it?

The best kind of broth to get is Herb Ox instant broth and seasoning, it is broth but does not taste like regular broth they are also called bouillon cubes. They are normally in the soup isle

I'm pre-op and have been "scoping out" various items at the grocery store each week. I noticed this past week in checking various cans of chicken broth that Swanson has 4g of sugar in it. Doesn't seem like much but may be enough to upset the pouch? Couple of other brands I checked did not list any sugar. - Anna

Let me tell you, I'm 5 days post-op right now, and I've been surviving on broth. I bought canned broth (College Inn brand) instead of making my own w/ boullion, and I prefer the vegetable broth over the chicken and beef. (they also have seasoned beef, but I thought that may have been a bit much at first.) The Veggie broth tastes like it's seasoned and it's sooo yummy...not blad at all!! Let me tell you--Vegetable Broth is the way to go!! :D

Try Safeway. There is a Chicken Broth made by Health Valley that has extra protein in it.

I have tried vegetable and beef broth, however, I am really getting tired of the same old thing. Although, I drink a lot of water, my mouth is constantly dry and I have this horrible pasty tasteon my tongue.

I personally prefer the flavor of the chicken broth, but I have found some beef broth at Food Lion that has 6 grams of protein per serving! It's not bad, but it has a strong flavor. As to the rumbles, I had that and it will go away. I actually think that the rumbles were helping me to get the gas out of my stomach because whenever I ate hot broth I'd get the rumbles and my tummy felt so much better afterwards. (I had a lot of nausea and gas at first) Good luck!

My favorite is Swanson's Beef Broth. I used it when I had to be on clear liquids for 2 days and it worked good.
