Question:
PLASTIC SURGERY - ALLERGIC TO PERCOCET....WHAT DID YOU USE FOR PAIN RELIEF??

I'm curious as to see what pain medicine others have used. I had percocet for my first surgery but after 3 weeks, had a severe allergic reaction. I was then prescribed demerol for my second surgery, but after doing alot of research, I decided to test it this weekend to see if I have any nasty side effects I have been reading about. I was sick as a dog, dry heaving and a bad headache. So my question is, what else can I take???? Vicodin was suggested by my PCP but my research says its in the same clas as Percocet and if I had an allergic reaction to percocet, I'll have one with vicodin. HELP!!!    — SMG I. I am allergic to Percocet, Darvocet, Vicoden, Morphine, Codiene, so I used Demoral after my breast reduction. Yes, it does have side effects, but not making me sick is better than the headaches. Besides I only used the Demoral for one day after the surgery, then extra strength tyernol worked fine. I would stay with what I know does not react with a bad reaction.

I too had an allergic reaction to Morphine and Demerol while in hosp for the RNY. When I had my hernia repair and TT (3wks ago) I had a pca machine with Dilaudid. Worked like a charm. Had Vicodin for home use, but that may not work for you. Ask your pharmacist. He/she will know what to suggest for pain mgt at home.

Consider Darvocet-N 100 or Ultram. Neither one has hydrocodone or oxycodone. I've had a breast lift, arms done and a lower body lift. I basically used prescription pain meds at night so I would sleep better.I took two Eight Hour Tylenol when I got up in the morning and then 8 hours later. That set me up for the Vicodin at bedtime. Taking the pain med on scheduled babsis for a few days makes it much easier to get up and move around. That way you get rid of those muscle aches and swelling as well as preventing blood clots and lung problems. Good luck.

Hi...my PS prescribed Loritab elixir (liquid)when I had my breast reduction. This is what I had after WLS also and it worked great. Didn't have to worry about a pill sitting in my pouch possibly doing damage to the staple line. The Loritab controlled the pain very well, and because it's a liquid it works faster. I'd take it and be painfree and asleep within 10-15 minutes. Good luck! Denise 316/158

I am 1 week out from PS (abdominoplasty/hernia repair) and react poorly to vioxx and morphine, with severe nausea. For my rny they used dilauded in the pca pump, but the PS hospital doesn't use it. I had demerol injections for the first day, but that was fine to stay in bed, but it dropped my blood pressure so I couldn't walk---too dizzy. I was switched to oral vicodin. I do fine with vocodin and percoset, BUT be aware, that with any narcotic used, whether it be morphine, vicodin or any of them, you can develop severe constipation. I had this with the rny but was so grateful for the pain relief I took it anyway. Just today, almost a week later, I am getting back to normal and I have been off any pain meds since Wednesday. They like to give you colace in the hospitals, but if you don't drink enough that binds you too. Oh, I just remembered---I had been given toradol by mouth as a pain killer for pre rny surgery and it works great. It is an aspirin derivative I think, non narcotic. You might want to ask your wls surgeon if you can take it. It is a small pill, and can be crushed, so if you mix it in yogurt or applesauce it won't cause any ulcer related difficulty. It helped me one night at home when my abdomen was having muscle spasms. I called my PS and asked him. They also use it alot for kidney stones so mit is strong. Sorry to ramble but this is still fresh in my mind. One thing for sure, talk to your PS before you go in. I learned that every hospital uses different pain meds. and my PS hospital had no pca pumps at all and did everything either oral or injection. I'd ask about the toradol. It takes a little longer to kick in, but does help. Good luck!!!!

I am allergic to morphine, codeine, vicodine, percs, and many others. The only 2 pain meds that I can use are dilaudid & toridal. Both work great!

I have had good results with the "On-Q" pain pump...a small pump you wear that pumps numbing medicine (Novocaine or the like) right into the areas of surgery (i.e. tummy after TT) Works great in most patients and decreases the need for narcotics by 60% on average. Last patient took 3 or 4 pills only !
