Question:
What should I buy for immediately after surgery?

I am having WLS in approx. two months.I have begun to shop for the things that I will need right away.I bought26 bottles of Isopure zero carb(40 gr protein)from GNC,16 cans of chicken broth, all the vitamins and minerals I need and lots of splenda(for later). What else should I get? I will also get unflavored whey powder from GNC.    — natalie J. (posted on September 24, 2003)

Your tastes will change after WLS. I would not go out and buy massive quanities for awhile. Just get a small amount of the things you want ie isopure and the like. Good Lux

What you will need really depends on what your surgeon has you eat (drink) right after surgery. When I had my RNY almost two years ago, I was on full liquids for the first week I was out of the hospital (no milk products. I lived on V8 Juice, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello and soup. My surgeon suggested getting my favorite canned soup and straining it as the broth is tastier than chicken or beef broth. I didn't start protein drinks til I was over 2 months post-op. What the other posters said is true about tastes changing. You will probably find that things you liked pre-op won't appeal at all after the surgery. I couldn't stand the taste of any kind of juice - it was way too sweet. That's why I drank so much V8. I started soft foods on day 12 (one week after leaving the hospital) and ate cream of wheat, scrambled eggs, peanut butter, tuna, salmon, baked potato, etc.

well, im 2 weeks post op and i need my fridge stacked with gaterade. that was the first drink given to me in the hospital. i also freeze the gaterade in cubes and suck on those. i love the grape and the orange one. make sure your nutritionist agrees with mine in that gaterade is great to drink right after surgery.

My suggestion is to wait to buy stuff until after your surgery!! I bought tons of stuff before surgery and it's still sitting in my pantry. Your tastes really do change after surgery and you'd hate to spend all of that money and end up not using any of it!!

Are you talking about food wise or all around? I found I needed new firmer and more in qty. pillows...I couldn't get enough pillows, and we raised the bed up with extender feet (dude that helped so much) and just a bunch of powdered broth stuff (I could make as little as I needed), I also used Procel to sprinkle on things (it doesn't give too much protein but some extra I used it in the broth and so forth)...

Even if your Doc recommends it - don't buy baby food. It is awful. Best regards

i had just bought all new furniture for my house and i didn't have a recliner( i had open RNY) so i rented one for 2 weeks. my doctor also didn't use binders(he wasn't against them he just didn't use them)so i bought one and i loved it. the binder helped alot from keeping my stitches from pulling and then kept my skin together after i had the staples taken out. it also helped with the retractor pain and when i would cough or sneeze. pillows pillows pillows. a peri bottle so you can clean yourself after going to the bathroom. i was a lightweight but it took me a week to be able to wipe without my husbands help. a hand held water sprayer for the shower. i didn't like caned broth so i bought the herb-ox brand packets in the green box(tastes really good) and added 3 saltines to it untill they were mushy, kinda like mock chicken soup. i really liked my sugar free ice pops. i had a hard time finding a protein shake that didn't taste yucky. i found designer protien at GNC. the chocolate is good. with the chocolate i mix 2 tablespoons smuckers natural (sugar and salt free) peanut butter(adds 10 grams protein), 4 ice cubes, 1/2 cup milk and a sprinkle of splenda ohhhhhhhh so good.

Hi Natalie, I am as of today 9 days post op from a Lap RNY and gall bladder removal, I am doing BETTER everyday! I started at 250 and am down 25.2 lbs. !! My taste buds have changed soooo much you would never beleive it. My surgeon has all patients on a 3 week liquid diet, 3-6 week soft/mushy foods. I was ready when I got home with many s/f items and juices, waters, propel vitamin water, crystal lites, tang , well you get the idea. It all changed......... I am drinking plain water ! loving it . I am drinking s/fdiet snapple peach tea because there is nothing in it and it's refreshing. Lt. Yougert's, s/f jello, NO pudding , it's disgusting !!! have had NO thoughts to try cream of wheat or the instant mashed potatoes, have had a couple cups of broth, from the paste, not cubes or cans. S/F Instant Carnation Breckfast is good and kind of a treat. I drink at least 1 serving of propel vitamin water a day for some needed vitamins. Strawberry/ kiwi is really good COLD. So try and buy simple and plan to have someone talk you to the market after you get home. Good Luck, Robin 250/225/160
