Question:
My hip has been falling asleep, anyone else experience this?

I have lost 31 pounds since my open RNY 1 month ago. I sleep on my side and lately my hip has been going numb in the night so I have to switch sides, and then the other hip goes numb and I switch again. Yesterday, my hip felt a little numb while I was awake during the day. Has anyone else experienced this??    — beeda (posted on September 11, 2003)

I am 5 weeks post-op, and both of my hips or side of legs have been numb from day one, so I asked my surgeon about it, and told me that they use posts or boards on the side of the OR table, so that your legs will not fall off during sugery and some on his patients have a problem with the soreness and numbing, but it will go away. Well, I still have that problem, but it does seem to be getting better. I would check with your surgeon, it may be something less serious of more serious, like a nerve problem.

Yes I did experience that. What is funny is that I did not have much problem with it before surgery when I was 442 lbs but from about 1 month after surgery, when I started sleeping in bed, I had this for probably about a month or two, which is strange since I had lost weight already. It has now gone away and does not give me problems. I think it has a lot to do with everything shifting around in your body and depending on where the weight comes off it my put pressure on some nerves for a while etc. You will notice strange things over the next number of months as your body makes changes. For now the only thing I can suggest is to maybe try some tylenol before bedtime to see if it will help you relax more and maybe not pinch off these areas. Also try an ice pack on your low back before bedtime to take any swelling down in the low back which is where the nerve pinching is probably coming from. Even if neither works it won't hurt you, assuming you can take tylenol.

I had this problem too. My surgeon said it was from being in one position so long on the operating table and it has affected my sciatica nerve. I went to my chiropractor yesterday for an adjustment and he said it might take one more visit but I am already feeling the numbness/pain lessening.
