Question:
Has anybody experienced problems with hives?

I am 8 weeks post-op and at least once a week for the past 4 weeks I've broken out in hives. I haven't had any foods that were new to me,and each time I had eaten something different.    — Jackie J. (posted on June 5, 2003)

Hi Jackie, I am 3 weeks post op and started getting hives at 10 out. It was on my arms and legs and even in my mouth!! I started to read the info on my prescriptions and found that my chewables can cause hives and rash. I then started to take Phenergan for nausea(it is also good for hives and itchyness). It cleared up a week later. When I went to my 2 week checkup, my Dr said he had never seen it before. My opinion, I had not been getting anywhere near the vitamins and protein before my surgery, I believe my body was adjusting to it. Hope this helps.

YES! I was a little further along than you when I was breaking out, about 4 months. I ended up in the emergency room one time because I started having trouble breathing. I had to get IV steroids, a shot of benedryl, and I can't remember what all. It was HORRIBLE! I only broke out on my neck and face. Lucky me. LOL! After my worst episode (the ER one), it gradually got better. I couldn't attribute it to any new foods, soaps, or anything else. It just seemed to happen from nothing. Keep benedryl handy, and if you start to feel like your throat is getting tight, or if you just feel like something isn't right with your throat or breathing, call 911. It's NOT something to mess with.

Yes, I am just getting rid of a case of hives. I was bit on the chin by something, the doctor thinks a spider, and he gave me Augmentin. The morning after the first dose I started getting hives on my face and with each pill it got worse. This started on a friday and by the time I called him on Monday they were worse than the bite. I had asked the pharmacist at eckerds if it could be caused by the augmentin and he said yes but to keep taking it. When I talked to the dr he said to stop and he called in another antibiotic and the hives went away after few days.

I get hives on my arms, tops of my hands, face and neck FROM THE SUN. It started out of the blue about 10 years ago. I have no idea why. I now use SPF 30 on those areas if I will be out in the sun longer that 20 minutes. I am preop so it doesn't have anything to do with wls. I have tried to figure it out and have only come up with a few theories-- I received cortisone shots in my shoulder a year before hives started, I'm getting older, all of the sunburns I had as a kid are affecting me now. Good luck at finding a cause and solution. mary ann
