Question:
Help! Doc Mad, says I need to lose 10 lbs by Tues or no surgery! Any suggestions?

I gained 18lbs in 4 months and my surgeon was mad at my pre-op appt today. Any suggestions on how to lose 10lbs in next 5 days... I'm sad, mad, and don't want to lose my dream. Thanks.... :-(    — psychdoc B. (posted on May 30, 2002)

Here is my suggestion: change doctors. A doc who wants you to lose 10 pounds in 7 days without being medically supervised is willing to put you on the table without ocnsideration for what you may do to your electrolytes and general health through the use of diuretics, diet restriction and laxatives to lose that much weight in 7 days. However, if you really want to work with that jerk, I suggest that you follow the Weight Watchers diet. As every dieter knows, the first week is usually one of dramatic weight loss, 7-15 pounds depending on how heavy you are due to water weight loss. Good Luck to you!

I agree with the previous poster about changing doctors. Obviously, the doc you chose is a technician who can do surgery, but not a professional who understands the challanges and difficulties of the morbidly obese. Who does he think he is anyway, threatening to cancel your surgery because you are having difficulties. Would he cancel surgery for someone whose cancer is getting worse just because??? Find someone with compassion and the true desire to help you. In the end, you will be glad you did. Warmest regards,

Drink 128 oz water a day for the next 6 days. Eat 3 SMALL well balanced meals per day. and walk for 15 min twice a day before breakfast and lunch. That should do the trick. Good Luck

I lost 13 pounds in a week on the Atkins diet. NO SALT! That is also important. I think that the other posters are right also. Water Water water. Then more. Good luck. Barb

Wow! 10 lbs. in 5 days? Doesn't the doctor admit he's being a bit unrealistic in that expectation??? I hope he's a better surgeon than he is a nutritional counselor! The only way anyone could possibly lose that much is by cutting out all carbs, drinking 128 oz. of water/day and exercising (cardio only) about 3 hours a day!!! Good luck to you!

I agree with the other posters about the concern of the surgeon for you. However, there is a diet that allows you to lost 10 lbs. in 3 days. If you are interested you can email me and I will try to find it for you. [email protected]

hi, I'm the original poster, and I just wanted to thank you all for your support and idea's. I'm doing okay today. I'm drinking water, eating salad and a little protein, no sugar, no carbs. Hope it works. Interesting thing when the doctor told me this yesterday, I said how would you like me to do that? He said eat only 500 calories a day. He said that a person can lose 10 lbs in a day if they try and I was like "WHAT?" I don't think that is true. I'm gonna go through with the surgery b/c I've spent two years working on getting approval and he is recommended by all the medical people in this community and has a good rep. As for his nutritional knowledge and bedside manner.. it sucks! I am just gonna keep tell myself it's only 5 days ...I've dieted before and I'm gonna do my best, if he wants to cancel at that point... well...I'll deal. Thanks again!

If it were me i would change docs, BUT if you must use this dr then i would try water pills cause more than likely if you retain water then you can get a good 10lbs of water off of you in anywhere from 3-7 days! stay away from salts or anything containing salts!! Cause that keeps the water on you! Hope you are able to come to a solution with this!! Good Luck hun!

I think your doctor is out of his mind. 10 pounds in ONE day? I don't think so. Impossible! (Said with much dramatic flair). Buuuutttt, I totally hear you about not wanting to start over with another doc. So, try to diet, drink lots of water, lots of exercise, and maybe some -dare I say it? - Metabolife. I hope you are successful, so you get the surgery that you really want asap. But, if you're not, maybe it's a sign that another doctor may be best for you. Or, anyone for that matter. If he's a good surgeon, let him do the job, but I would make note of this in the "comments on your doc" section of your profile AND forget about him for aftercare...maybe your PCP can take care of it or refer you to someone who can. I wish you, seriously, the best of luck with all of this. Please keep us updated. :) ~Paula
