Question:
I've heard some people mention this before, but I need some more input.

I'm ten weeks post-op, and I can't stand the taste or smell of food. The first four weeks, I craved food constantly. Now, nothing appeals to me. I really eat to prevent fainting, but it's nowhere near 4 ozs. What's wrong with me? I'm worried about this because I honestly believe that my weightloss will not be as great if I don't get in the proteins. Another thing that concerns me is the number of times I urinate a day. Before surgery I went once almost every hour. Now, I go about three times a day. I drink more water now that ever. I don't drink anything but water, yet my urine is that dark color. I don't mean to gross anybody out, but I want to know if I need to see a doctor, or if this is common.    — Tammy W. (posted on September 27, 2001)

Im 6 wks out and I too dont really love food anymore. Its just not the same....you have to chew and chew and cant drink with meals and its just not like it used to be. And I am really happy about that. To make sure I get my proteins I buy foods that are high in protein, so when I do eat Im making smart choices. As for the water...after this surgery you need to consume between 64-70 oz a day. When your urine is dark you are not getting enough and by not eating your body is absorbing it all instead of releasing it you may actually be dehydrated..(im not a dr. but im guessing by what you have told us on here) All I can say its important to eat> I saw my nutritionist last tuesday and she said if you dont eat enough proteins you can start to loose your hair...thats not what I want and I m sure you dont either. Eat protein shakes...also I found Soy Crisps by Glenny they have 10g of protein in 1 bag 2 g fat and I use that to supplement. They are really good and are sold in health food stores. So just do the best you can and try to eat as healthy as possible. Good Luck

Some people eat only 1 oz meals - you will probably be eating more than you want to in no time. Make what you _do_ eat count. ** As for the dark urine, vitamins, especially iron, b and c can cause urine discoloration and smell (and asparagus!). If you have lots going in, it must be coming out. I don't think I go as much either, I think partially beciase my bladder isn't being squished by 70 extra pounds. I hadn't thought about this - but I never get up in the middle of the night anymore, either. I think I go more volume, fewer times a day. Kinda nice, actually :)

I'm 14 weeks out...and boy do I hear you! Unfortunately it seems to me that the smell and taste thing is just getting worse. My doctor keeps telling me that it's because I'm in ketosis and burning fat so fast. I guess losing the bad taste/smell is the only GOOD thing about the weight loss slowing. As for the urine, mine has always been dark too...and I definitely get in all my fluids. My nutritionist says it's because we're peeing out all the fat! And to travel a little bit further into grossness...I don't know if you've noticed, but the funny smell problem also shows itself when you go to the bathroom. Same smell...so I can't help but think it's the same thing. Ketosis. Best of luck.
