No straw? Why?

I am reading over the post-op diet and it says to not use a straw but without reason. Why can't we use a straw? I KNOW I will sound weird, but I have this weird thing about liquids touching my lip. There must have been some childhood issue with it because drinking most drinks is extremely uncomfortable for me without a straw if it is in a cup. All my cups have a straw in them and that is how I am able to get my water in. Can someone explain the reason for the no straw thing?

Because my doctor said i would be swallowing air and that would cause an uncomfortable gassey feeling.

Many people use straws with no issues.  My doctor is fine with it.  It really helped me reach my fluid goals.

Follow your doctor's advice.

That out of the way, I always ignored that rule. I don't swallow a lot of air and I prefer a straw. Hell, they gave me one in the hospital post-op.

A straw DOES help you drink faster, which is a BAD thing post op. Otherwise... yeah. I use one all the time now that I can bol****er with no trouble.

Funny thing is that my surgeon's post op diet instructions suggest using a straw to reduce the amount of air swallowed. There was one on my first tray post op and I used it and never looked back.

Even now I find that a straw helps me get in more fluids. My hubby was sleeved Tuesday and loves his straw...(and he's doing super well at getting his fluids in)

Kelly-Anne, I heard from FatKatFatKat that all seemed to go fine for you and your husband in Mexicali. So glad she got a chance to meet you guys! It's always easier with a little moral support.

It went really well! They've changed the drug protocol and he didn't have nearly the pain I did my first 2 days. (Just a bit when he hiccuped, and that eased a lot as soon as the drain was out) Other than the incisions and him not eating anything (and not being hungry) you'd never know he had major surgery 4 days ago.

We got back to San Diego yesterday noon and we spent the rest of the day out shopping. He's off doing a load of wash right now - we're heading back out when he gets back to our room.

I hope Fatkatfatkat's surgery went as well. I gave her my contact info so we can stay in touch. Have you heard from her since her surgery yesterday?
