RNY with dialysis

I am working with someone who just had RNY but is also a dialysis patient. If there are any other RNY'ers out there with kidney failure, please let me know any suggestions you have for good protein sources that fit well with the renal diet. He's in the full liquids phase.

They can do bypass on dialysis patients?  my brother in law is also in kidney failure and wants to have RNY but didn't think they'd do it on kidney failure patients. Any info you can tell me on this would be appreciated. Thanks :)

They can, in this instance the patient is 19. The one downside though that I can see is that, if you get a transplant, malabsorption of transplant meds might be a problem. I personally think a sleeve is better for that reason.

there was a member a while back who had WLS so she could lose enough weight to have a kidney transplant.  From what I remember she had the transplant and was doing great.

I wonder if the sleeve might be a better WLS option because of the lack of malabsorption?

That would be my assumption. I work with kidney transplant patients. I imagine it is doable with rny, you just have to really watch labs at the beginning and adjust dosage to compensate, but it would still make me a bit nervous.

I am the person who had ESRD and then got a transplant. It took me a year to get my nephrologist to okay RnY. She shared your concerns. I had so much weight to lose there really was no other option. I had the surgery and lost the weight, got on the list, and received a kidney 1/27/12. I was a girl in between worlds post RnY and pre transplant. I ate on the lower end of the protein scale and I didn't supplement as high as normal people. After transplant it took longer to get therapeutic on tacro. I was in the hospital a few extra days for that. I still take a little higher tacro dose that most but have maintained good levels.

RnY saved me. I walked a very thin line before dialysis and made it to transplant before needing it. Losing 179 pounds also bought me more time because FSGS is helped by weight loss.

Don't be nervous! It works.
