Why I have Chosen RNY

Through my research and my analysis of what I want and what I believe WLS is about I have determined that RNY is the best surgery for Me. Here's why...the Doctors who designed and developed the 3 stomach changing surgeries know that the Human Body is self-righting, it will find a way to get back to "normal" if it can. So it is a given that anywhere from 18-24 months or so the Body will to a greater degree negate the short term effects of any WLS. So any weight loss after that time is due to the eating and exercise habits of the Recipient.  If WLS Recipients have not developed good habits in the 2 year window of opportunity that WLS gives, then the recipient will not be successful. After 18-24 months or so it is almost irrelevant what type of WLS a Recipient has had. So the key to continuing to lose weight after that window and maintaining whatever weight loss one has is based almost solely on eating and exercise habits.

Understanding the above, the key for me then are my Short Term goals...what do I need to accomplish within that window of opportunity I have been Blessed with. My short term goals are:
(1) Lose 100+ lbs within 1 year reasonably safe
(2) Use a proven, safe and effective procedure
(3) Select a WLS that is not too invasive but more effective in the short term than the Lap Band
(4) Select the Surgery that will give me the Best chance to change habits/develop new good eating and exercise within that 18-24 month period
(5) Associate with a Bariatric Group that is Top Notch and that will give me the short and long term help that I need relative to surgery and ancillary treatment and services
(6) Select a WLS that My Insurance won't give me hell about but meets the effective criteria w/in 1 yr

This is the analysis process I use, all that other stuff is almost irrelevant; all things being equal, show me someone's eating and exercise habits from inception-2 years after WLS and success or failure can pretty much determined for the long term. I won't have Buyer's remorse because I don't know or a doctor is not in my town who does the surgery. I know WLS is my Tool for 2 sweet years, there after it's on Me. So I'm going to ask questions and whatever from any source to Better prepare myself for what is to come.

  3. How to Win People to Your Way of Thinking
  4. Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment

Part One

Fundamental Techniques in Handling People

  1. Don't criticize, condemn or complain.

Part Three

Win people to your way of thinking

  1. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.

Part Four

Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment

A leader's job often includes changing your people's attitudes and behavior. Some suggestions to accomplish this:
  1. Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
  2. Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.
  3. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
  4. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
  5. Let the other person save face.
  6. Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be "hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise."
  7. Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
  8. Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct.
  9. Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

Give it a rest already! Listen, I got RNY. I lost 200 pounds. Still have 100 more to lose. I don't regret getting RNY. I'm glad I lost what I did. This was the best option presented to me 4 years ago. I followed the diet portion PRECISELY. Physically, not related to weight, my mobility was lacking. It wasn't due to not trying, but to other physical problems. Would you call my WLS a failure because I still have 100 to lose? I wouldn't. I lost 2/3 of my excess. The funny thing is, part was AFTER the 2 year window, during/after BOTH of my post-op pregnancies. I am 4 years post-op and can eat some things we were told we COULDN'T eat after RNY. Our tool is there to teach us MODERATION. When you have a few years under your belt, come back and preach to us. Until then, quit spouting off like some damn know-it-all.

I can totally respect this post. You have taken the time neccessary to understand everything involved for lifetime success for what you're choosing so you're prepared for what is to come. Unfortunately not all are as savvy as you are.

Good for you.  It looks like you did your homework and chose what would be right for you.  That's all I'm taking out of your post.

As for others who have reprimanded you, I think they misunderstood your post.  To those people -- I don't believe ValueMe wrote this post to put down other surgeries, I think she is just looking for encouragement from others who've had the surgery and maybe a little pat on the back for doing her homework.  It's not that big a deal.

Good luck to you.

Actually that is not the problem a large majority of us have with her posts. Notice I use the plural here. It's not just this post. It's the previous ones on top of this one. It the negative tactics of tearing down another surgery from the other posts that are carrying over to this one.
