RNY may help improve your diabetes............ it may return with the RNY.
Please look at this link:
http://www.dsfacts.com/Type-2-Diabetes-Cure.html
I am a revision from a failed RNY. You can appeal your approval for your RNY and it is more than likely you can be approved to have the DS
((((((((((((Also............ DSers can eat way more, as we absorb less, due to the way the DS is done, as opposed to the RNY) Here is an example from someone else who has the DS:
WE have heavy duty mal-absorption, and that makes a HUGE difference. I was thinking about this last night. I ate some sunflower seed butter (like peanut butter, but made with sunflower seeds) late last night. 2 TBSP was 200 calories, I think I had 4 or 5 tbsp. (around 500 calories) but I would onlly absorb about 30% of it.
140 calories from fat PER 2 TBSP = 350 cals from fat (5 TBSP x 70 cals per TBSP)
20% fat absorption of 350 cal = 70 cal from fat.
the balance is protein and a couple carbs = 30 x 5 TBSP = 150 cal
70 cal from protein x 50% absorption = 35 cals
30 cal from sugar, (1.5g per TBSP) , 100% absorption.
50 cals from the rest of the carbs (mostly dietary fiber) @ 60% absorption = 30 cal
so adding it up:
70 from fat
30 from sugar
30 from carbs
35 from protein
--------------------
165 calories
165 \ 500 = 33.0 % absorbed.
SO, eat more, NO GUILT. You may find that your weight loss picks up!! You may be in starvation mode.

Good Luck with your revision!!!! Are you going from your lap band to the DS?

The DS has THE BEST long term weight loss stats, hands down. And a broader diet. Unlimited fat. And you have the ability to take NSAIDS (you cannot do that FOR LIFE with the RNY)....... NSAIDS like ibuprofen and Aleve.

I want to add my 2 cents. Sometimes you have to BE YOUR OWN BEST ADVOCATE for yourself, even with your upcoming appointment with your internist. Do you have a 'convincing argument' to discuss with your internist, just in case your internist is not for your having a revision from RNY to DS? Maybe want to keep this thought in the back of your mind is all I am saying.
I truely wish our providers were all advocates for us and our health, bus sometimes they are against us. I have had my PCP for well over 10 years, and I have had to be an advocate for my weight loss surgery revision more than once, prior to being approved. (He wanted me to get a band on top of the RNY. **SNORT** ~~ I laughed at him and told him I DID NOT want the crapband on top of this crappy RNY!!!! I told him I wanted a revision from the RNY to the DS. PERIOD. MY PCP finally came around)

I also want to add, look at how far out from surgery the revisions are. Meaning the "honeymoon" stage. Look to see if there are more people further out from their surgeries, like 2 plus years.

My surgery took 4-5 hours. I was in the hospital for 4 days.
I flew from Alaska to California............. Honestly, I would have flown ANYWHERE to have my revision!!!!
Travel is such a SMALL drop in the bucket for the rest of your life and health!!!!
I do all of my follow up with my family doc/PCP, and stick on these boards to the advice of the vets. Our docs (surgeons are good cutters, not the best aftercare............. As for the family doc or PCP doing the follow up, you have to be YOU best ADVOCATE for YOUR HEALTH) usually learn with your teaching them, that is the simple truth.
I love my PCP, had him around 11 years, but he is willing to learn.

Just curious...... Have you researched the DS? (Duodenal Switch). Dr. Ungson in Mexico is one of the best. You owe it to yourself to make sure you have all of the facts!!!
Did you know that the DS has the BEST long term weight loss stastics for keeping the weight off. As you look on this board, you will see many failed RNY's.
Please research the DS. DSFacts.com is a good place to start. You can take NSAIDS with the DS. With the RNY you can NEVER take them again. For Life. With the RNY, you have a greater chance of developing reactive hypoglycemia (google it). It is no fun. I started to develop it.
Good Luck in whatever you decide.
