7 months post op 1 month pregnant, HELP!
im 7 months post op RNY bypass surgery and i just found out that im 1 month pregnant. ive been reading alot of things online saying that alot of women miscarry if they get pregnant less than a year post op im terrified of losing the baby. i had a lot of complications with my last pregnantcy, hypertention/ gestational diabetes, along with others i dont eat much yet and havent seen my surgeon in months so my blood work hasnt been done. ive been trying to get in more healthy foods but i get extremely nauseous and throw up. ive been really tired and light headed and start seeing black spots and shaking alot, i have my first prenatal appointment feb 16 so ill ask my doctor but i wanted to know what to expect with pregnancy after weightloss? are we considered high risk? more frequent ultrasounds? more likely to have a c-section? and anything else that would be good for me to know?
I too found myself pregnant after only 5 months and I am now 6 1/2 months along, I had a rough time with keeping food down in the first three months because I was so sick all the time !!! but at around the 4 month mark I started being able to eat and the baby has been growing and KICKING a lot, and there are few concerns regarding the pregnancy on the part of the doctors. I am off work now but only because I suffer from Fibromyalgia and they also believe I have Lupus, so working as a personal support work was too much for me to handle. The only really hard part I find is seeing the scale go up after working so freaking hard to make it go down, but many people deal with that post op.
I am sure you will be fine, just remember to eat what ever will stay down, I lived off potato chips and crackers for the first while. Wishing you the best of luck !!!!

Congratulations and welcome to the club! I know it's hard to be too excited at first out of fear... I found out I was pg at 6 months out. I'm now 15wks and the baby is growing well. Even though I've made it through the first trimester, I am still very nervous. I've lost 20lbs since finding out I was pg because of morning sickness (after losing 100lbs from my RNY alone)...but that has started to ease up a bit and the Zofran the doc prescribed has helped. My OB does consider me high risk, but not for any other reason than I am early out from surgery...there have been no other red flags in this pregnancy so far. I've had 3 u/s so far, which is 1 more than they typically do...just to keep tabs. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
1. Get your bloodwork done ASAP. You need to check for any deficiencies now since this is a critical time for you and the baby. The baby will take what it needs from you, but you don't want to do damage to yourself in the process.
2. Add some healthy carbs to your diet. Keeping your body out of ketosis is essential as it can harm the baby.
3. As far as your vitamin regimen, some women replace one bariatric multi-vitamin with a prenatal. My surgeon told me to take my regular two multis but add a folic acid supplement. (I take an additional 800mcg). This is in addition to all the calcium, iron, B12, etc that we take.
4. It sounds like you are dehydrated...I see the spots a lot too and it is due to dehydration. Up your fluid intake if you can. It could also mean low blood pressure, but my guess is dehydration.
5. As far as what to expect - we can expect to either continue to lose weight or not gain a whole lot during this pregnancy (although some gain more than others). My bari-surgeon did a great job of calming me down and assuring me that provided I keep up with my vitamins and continue to eat as much as I can when I can, that I shouldn't expect the RNY to ruin the pregnancy, for lack of a better phrase.
I hope I remembered everything and this is helpful...
Good luck to you and keep us posted! :)

did your doctor tell you how many ultrasounds to expect? and are they making you take the glucose test? im thinking of passing on it i believe it has 56 grams of sugar, and i can barely handle 15. how many weeks were you when you found out u were preggers? and what is ketosis i hear it alot but dont know what it is or what it affects?

I was about 5-6wks when I found out I was preggers...I was shocked and amazed because I was on BC at the time. My OB's office generally gives u/s at 4 points during pregnancy - 1) to establish pregnancy and due date, 2) to perform the nuchal fold scan (early testing for defects), 3) to perform second part of birth defects testing and anatomy scan, 4) and the final anatomy scan before delivery. Of course, they may do more for various reasons. So far, I've had u/s at 7wks, 10wks, and 14wks, and my next one will be at 18wks. As for the glucose testing, I keep forgetting to talk to my OB about it, but I plan to refuse it...he's an understanding guy so I'm hoping he won't give me trouble on it.
You know, the jury is still out on ketosis and its effects on the fetus. Some believe that it can cause brain damage. This is in part because when our bodies are in ketosis, we are primarily burning fats for energy as opposed to carbs. This deprives the baby of fats that are necessary for brain development. The problem for us is that we are more susceptable to EXTREME ketosis and if it can negatively affect the baby, why take the chance. Now, to be clear, this doesn't mean we should go to the other extreme and use pregnancy as an excuse to stuff our faces with simple carbs like sugars, white rice/breads/pasta, junk foods like chips, etc. It means that instead of having our focus only be on getting in protein, we need to add complex carbs into the mix...like vegetables and fresh fruits, whole grains, etc. Thankfully for me, I can tell when my body is in ketosis...my body odor changes drastically.

Congrats! I got preg 3 weeks after surgery. I am currently 13 weeks preg. I found out I was preg when I was 7 weeks (I passed out in CVS). My OB does not consider me high risk. I have had 3 ultrasounds so far (including the 12 week scan). Baby Lola (hoping for a girl) is doing good so far. Stay positive and get excited.
