Topic: RE: Couch to 5K
Hi.....just wanted to add my 2 cents' worth......I'm on this training program because I ALWAYS wanted to be a runner....even just a "casual" runner......who could enter a 5K race.  I'm can run 1-1/2 miles now, but have gotten stuck at the part that says to run a mile, walk 1/4 mile, run another mile.  I'm staying at that point until I can do it, and then I'll move forward again.  It's hard but so worthwhile!  My 5K is scheduled for November 1, so I should have plenty of time to be ready.

Just wanted to offer some words of encouragement.  When I started training in late May, I could barely run 1/4 mile without stopping.  It was been fabulous to watch myself improve over time, even if the progress is slow.

I'm told it's a wonderful feeling to cross the finish line on your first official race, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Topic: RE: JULY BANDSTERS PLEASE REPORT SUCCESS
I was banded on 7/18/08, and I've lost 22 pounds in 11 weeks......not stellar, but I'm not complaining!   Two pounds a week is pretty good. especially since those 11 weeks included a 2-week hurricane aftermath interruption and a 5-day vacation.  Would have been better if I had stepped up the aerobic exercise a bit, and that's what I'm trying to do now.  Had my second fill today.  All in all, life is good!

Topic: RE: Do you currently use a Psychologist on a normal basis?
Hi.....In my experience, the relationship with the psychologist at a bariatric after-care program would likely be very different from a relationship with another psychologist that you would engage to address a wide range of personal issues.  How often you would see that person and for how long depends a great deal on what your particular issues are.  Depending on the number and complexity of the issues, the relationship could be a short-term one (weekly or every-other-week vists lasting for a period of several weeks to several months) or it could be a long-term relationship (lasting a year or several years).  It's also possible to have an "intermittent" relationship where you would go for a couple of months, take a break, and then come back for another series of sessions as needed.

"Shopping" for the right therapist is crucial.  It's similar to looking for the right primary care physician or the right lawyer......you need to have good chemistry with that person so that you can quickly establish trust and a good rapport.  It wouldn't hurt to interview 3 or 4 different ones (even if just on the phone, although in person is better).  A good psychologist will agree that a good personal connection from the outset is important, and they wouldn't be offended by your asking to have an "informational" meeting to hear about their practice, their level of experience, and their preferred style or the type(s) of therapy that they practice.  If a therapist is opposed to that idea, I would be highly suspicious as to whether they were the right person to work with.

If you work outside the home, and your employer has an Employee Assistance Program, you should be able to get referrals to experienced psychologists in your area.

It sounds like you're being proactive in trying to acquire the coping skills you need in advance of stressful times ahead.  That's a good idea.  Wish you the best of luck!

Hi, Tara.  I take the Omega-3 supplement made by Coromega, which I get from the Bariatric Advantage company.  It comes in a "pudding" consistency and an orange/chocolate flavor, which is quite good.  The supplement comes in individual foil packets.  Anyway, it's easy to take, and I like the flavor.  You might check it out.

Maybe we should close out this thread by saying how grateful we are that the mean-spirited people, a few of whom have posted responses within this thread, are few and far between.  Bashing isn't what anyone comes to this site for, and we can only ignore it when it makes an unwelcome appearance.

Topic: RE: Surgery has been cancelled
Hi.....about 4 weeks before my surgery, my surgeon decided to send me for an endoscopy to check out my esophagus.  The results were that my esophagus was inflamed due to acid reflux (the gastroenterologist took a couple of biopsies of the inflamed tissue to be sure what was going on).  The official diagnosis was "esophagitis" due to acid reflux.  He put me on Nexium.

My surgeon looked at the results about 5 days before my surgery date and said "no problem".  Surgery occurred on the originally scheduled date.

Have no idea if this situation is the same as yours, but wanted you to know what happened in my case.

Good luck,

Topic: RE: Challenge to eat enough calories and protein
One of my favorite recurring posts is the one where everyone lists what they had to eat that day.  From what I can tell, however, it appears that most people *****port what they're eating are not getting at least 1200 calories and 60 to 70 grams of protein daily.  I can't tell for sure, of course, but it seems to me that they're eating much less than that.

The education that I've received thus far says that we should shoot for the 1200 calories and 60 to 70 grams of protein level for optimum weight loss and health.  I had surgery on 7/18/08, have had one fill, and am currently at 3 cc in a 10 cc band.  I currently have only very mild restriction, but I do have to make a concerted effort to eat enough to reach these targets because I'm not hungry.

When I reach that optimum level of restriction, will it be impossible to eat 1200 calories and hit the protein target?  I read the posts of various people who say they take 4 bites at a particular meal and can't eat any more.  If that's the case, then how in the world do they get an adequate amount of calories and nutrition?

Topic: RE: Do You Eat When You Are Not Hungry?
Hi....I'm still new at this game since I'm only one month out, but I can tell you that I have to eat by a schedule whether I'm hungry or not.  I'm one of the fortunate ones in that I've experienced true, stomach-grumbling only about twice since I've been banded.  I just don't get hungry.  [Boy, does that sound weird to say out loud!]  If I didn't have an established schedule, I would never get the target amount of calories and protein in every day.  I'm try to eat between 1000 and 1200 calories and 60 to 70 grams of protein daily.

I just had my first fill, so I've got 3 cc in a 10 cc band, but I only have minimal restriction at this point.  I only feel restriction when I eat something that's very dry AND I'm eating too fast AND I'm taking bites that are too large.  But there must be SOME restriction or other benefit here, because I'm "never" hungry.  I know this is not the same experience for everyone, because I've read lots of posts where people are constantly fighting hunger during the period they call "bandster hell" when someone hasn't yet had several fills to reach their best level of restriction.  But I"m not complaining!

I never thought I would see the day when I would have to urge myself to fit in another small meal or else I won't make my target level of calories and protein.  Too strange for words!

Just for the record, my one month bandiversary was yesterday, and I'm 12 pounds down.  Yea for that!

Good luck,

Topic: RE: Contest: Free Band-Friendly Eats!

What a fabulous idea!  And if I were fortunate enough to win, I would be pleased to have any of the 3 items you've described.........They all sound absolutely delicious!

But see, my fear is that my dream is too simple to compete effectively with the other dreams already listed and those that will come after mine.....I have to admit that I have been so blessed in life.  I have been fortunate enough to accomplish all of my goals with the exception of controlling my weight.  I'm in my mid-50's and have had serious weight problems since my mid-20's, after having been an overweight child and teenager.  And yes, like most bandsters, I have the diabetes, the high cholesterol, the family history of heart problems that is not helped by my morbid ovesity, and on and on and on.

Nevertheless, amidst all of this, I found the love of my life to whom I have been married for 27 years.....he's been my support through many, many up and down weight levels over the years.  I have a challenging and highly rewarding career.  I have a close knit family with many nieces and nephews who contribute a lot to our happiness.  So......I'm not saying we're perfect (far from it) but I know how to count my blessings.

So, having been given so much in life, I feel a little guilty "asking for more"...... but here's my absolute dream:    I want to walk down a beach in a one-piece swimsuit, holding my head high, not worrying about who may be looking at me with disapproval, enjoying the sand and the sea and the beautiful scenery without a care in the world.  I have not allowed myself to wear a bathingsuit in public (or even in private) in decades......and swimming and just being near the water in a "normal" bathingsuit are two of my greatest joys.

So, Jean......that's it.  I would think I had died and gone to heaven if that dream ever comes true.....and even though I'm only one month out from my surgery, I have a lot of hope that I'll get there one of these days!

Thanks for doing this......I think we're all winners for being able to articulate our hopes and dreams with people who understand.

Topic: RE: When do I tell him....
I don't have any personal experience to share, but I hear that one of the biggest mistakes that can be made in a new relationship is to tell someone too soon that you used to be A LOT heavier than you are now.  That can be a scary thing for someone to hear.  My suggestion is that you play things by ear and see how things develop.  If it were me, I would definitely wait months to see what happens and get to know each other and develop a certain rapport and trust before considering when to tell the other person (and I do mean "when", not "whether")......Of course, you'll want and need to tell him at some point, but I think the conventional wisdom is that telling too soon may not be the best choice, long term.

That's my two cents' anyway........Good luck and have a great time!

So, what flavor(s) of the Bariatric Advantage have you tried?  I take the Lemon Cream muti-vitamin, which tastes just like a Sweet Tart candy to me.  Then I take the calcium citrate in the chocolate flavor....not wonderful, but not too disagreeable.

Topic: RE: I need help with protein
Hi....I actually LOVE the flavor of my protein shake......I use the Isopure vanilla.  Here's what I do:

I put some orange juice my blender....just enough to barely cover the blades, if that much.  Then I put in 1/4 c. of the Isopure (25 g. protein).  I mix that well.  Then I add 1/2 of a banana and 5 or 6 frozen strawberries and mix it very well.   Yummy.....and a great way to get in some healthy fruit.

I'm one month out from surgery now, so I'm trying not to do protein shakes, but if I'm having trouble getting all of my protein in, and I'm pressed for time, I might have one of these in the evenings....And they still taste great.  My calorie calculation says it's about 315 calories (but no guarantees on that.....just my best guess!)

Good luck,
BB

B:    1 fried egg, 1/4 c. cream of wheat, 2 T. corned beef hash
L:     2 oz. tuna, 1/2 T. mayo, steamed yellow squash
D:    1/2 c. homemade chili w/hamburger meat and beans
S:     1/2 c. Jean's cottage cheese chocolate pudding

P.S. Trying to make some things on the weekend, like the chili, that I can freeze for future meals.  I'm only one month out, so I'm trying to get organized.  My goals include trying to get in 5 fruits and/or vegetables a day.....now that's a challenge!

Topic: RE: who did you tell?
Hi, Denise......I love reading about the choices people have made about whether or not to talk about their surgery.  Everyone's story is different.  I chose to tell my husband and my personal trainer, who is also a good friend.  Chose not to tell any of my family members.  They've seen me try so hard over the years and end up failing every time by regaining everything I've lost and adding even more.  I didn't want them to see this as just another effort that was doomed to failure.  I did tell one coworker who had the surgery a year ago, and 2 friends who are seriously contemplating having the surgery.  So, I get to talk about how things are going with several people who are very understanding and supportive.

I told my boss and my admin. asst. at work that I was having abdominal surgery......I'm only one month out, but when I start losing more weight, they may figure out what kind of abdominal surgery I had, and if they do, that's okay.  I had surgery on a Friday and went back to work the following Thursday......Really should have stayed off the entire week but kept telling myself that I wasn't going to let a little thing like a 30-minute outpatient procedure keep me down!  Wrong way to look at it........

Good luck with everything......

Topic: RE: Bump in the Road and I am scared....
Hi.....My doctor ordered an endoscopy shortly before surgery.  The gastroenterologist took a couple of biopsies during the procedure, and the lab report said that I had esophagitis (inflamation of the lining of the esophagus due to reflux).  My surgeon said "no problem" and proceeded with the lap band surgery.  Hope this will be the same for you!
