Hi there...I keep tons of small amounts of food in my pockets!! You ready; all nuts (almond, walnuts, ect), seeds (sunflower, pumpkin), rye crackers, other whole wheat crackers, raisins. When I feel my blood pressure dropping, I'll pop something into my mouth.

Hi here...Been gone for awhile. Have started to hear about the bypass surgery called "the Loop". Just wondering if they cut the vagus nerve (on the stomach) and does it release less of the hormone ghrelin like in the RNY surgery? Thanks for any info...

Many growers go all natural...And get a much higher price. New insects are entering into the orchards. This is making it harder and harder to go all natural. There have always been things like Navel Orange Worm and ants that will attack the trees. If you do a winter spray (pesticide), you can prevent many of the insect from entering into the nuts. Also during heavy rains many grower will do a fungicide spray (and add minor nutrients to the spray...Helping with the nut set). On the 4 almond trees I have at my home and small farm, I have gone with a different variety. It is a hard shell (Texas Mission). The insects can't get into the nut. But the shell is as hard as a walnut and the taste is not as good as the soft shell varieties...

Former almond and grape grower here. The almond crop may be very light...Because of frost. It may mean higher prices. Many WLS people eat them I know. I keep them in my pockets to snack on most days. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/23/freeze-leaves-californias-al mond-growers-fearing-significant-damage.html

This is why I avoid the Main Forum as much as I can...

Many of you will not know what I am talking about...That's OK. In general, many RNY and Sleeve patients have one side of their vagus nerve cut and cauterized...Near their stomach. I am just wondering if those of you who would know, (please no "I've never heard of this")...Has there been any animal or human studies (procedures) where that alone was the surgery. Did it help with weightloss? Is there any empirical data on this procedure? Thanks...Brian

Just a quick warning. Pork, venison, and bear are the toughest meats to digest. They may never sit well with your pouch...

Is this a good thing or bad thing? What do you like best about their menu? It looks really greasy on their website. Thoughts? Brian in California

Like you said...A better absorbable iron would be one thing. You can move to (if you haven't yet) tuna, shrimp, beef, and spinach. The tuna mix with light mayo, salt and pepper, celery (chopped very very thinly...Not stringy). The beef should be strips of a lean cuts of beef. You know the drill by now. As you introduce new stuff to your pouch (at home) you say: "Now pouch I am giving you something new. Please tell me if you like it or not". So say it is beef strips, you eat maybe 1/2 an oz...Chewed well. You let it go into your pouch and wait...Do not pass go, do not collect $200. About 5 to 10 minutes. Your pouch will let you know if it likes it or not. If nothing seems wrong down there, try some more, very slowly in very small amounts. Brian PS You may want to get a small Wendy's Chili...No cheese or onion or cracker. Just a 1/2 spoonful and see if your pouch can handle it. Good eats...

On old posts from way back, I will go to Google. Type in Obesity Help Cabin111 and the topic I was talking about. Many times I will find the thread...

10 years plus out...To the point. Simple carbs are very ADDICTING!! They need to be avoided as much as possible. They raise your blood sugar level and drop it very quickly. So when you choose 3-4 oz of Pepsi VS 1/2 an apple...Your blood sugar level spikes...VS the apple that keeps your sugar level even for a longer period of time...As your system breaks down the apple. Going down the road of simple carbs is a very slippery slope. You start to justify your actions...A reward!! You gain 5 pounds back and justify it...Well everybody does it!! Yeah, right, sure...Before you know it you've gained 30-40 pounds and wonder what happened??
I've gone to the local support group for over 11 years now. I don't make it there much anymore...I can find the info online. But starting out (over 10 years ago) you just had dial up internet...Obesity Help and the local support group was my lifeline.
Just saying, the last time I went to the local support group...Just what I saw and heard. Those who were years out and at or close to normal weight did 3 things; limited their simple carbs use, ate mostly protein and complex carbs, and did some form of exercise (even walking or gardening). Everyone of them did it.
I and a few others are the exceptions. I'll explain (I still have my demons with food). I will eat the bad stuff...But really limit it. I won't usually eat anything with high fructose corn syrup. I also eat right most of the time. The last thing is I exercise/work more than about 90% of most WLS people do...So I can get away with it. I ride my bike (run errands), mow lawns (acres...By push gas mower), (pruning, thinning, picking) fruit trees and grapevines. My exercise is my penance for the bad food choices I eat; dark chocolate, tortilla chips, cake, hot dogs. If I didn't do the exercise, I would have to cut way way back on the bad (simple) carbs. Brian

Ditto what others have said...Water, sodium, potassium. Dehydration is the # 1 reason WLS people reenter the hospital. Many just go in...Get the IV (water sodium/potassium) and come out better.
I've asked the local bariatric surgeon years ago..."Why not have the WLS patients come back in two weeks post op and get an IV in their office"? I was thinking more RNY at the time. He said the reason they don't do it is because they are concerned about getting the IV going and air bubbles in the IV. If they occurred, you would want to have an emergency room there to take care of any issues that were to pop up. Just paraphrasing his words.
Don't forget foods rich in potassium; apricots, avocados, bananas, cantaloupe, kidney beans, lima beans, milk, mushrooms, oranges/orange juice, peas, prunes, raisins, spinach, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, yogurt. I keep this list on the wall in front of me for occasions like this.
One last thought...Wendy's Chili. I'm a one trick pony on this one...I preach it. You have the sodium, potassium (beans), and protein (beans and meat). You add the tomatoes and peppers (Vitamin C) which helps with the iron...It's like a perfect food...Especially if you are on the road. Just my thoughts...Brian

Hey Guys (men)...Just a reminder we have a Men's Forum here at OH. It is a great group of guys and very supportive. Check us out and bookmark it if you like what you see. Brian http://obesityhelp.com/forums/men/

When I was dropping quickly I would tell my wife "I'm down another pound"...That got really old for her after awhile. I can see how frustrating it can be to hear that.
But it all came to a head when we were at the dryer pulling out clothes. She pulled out a pair of shorts (I had gotten down to about 187)...And I asked her, "are those your shorts or mine"? Went over like a lead balloon!!

I was almost exactly where you were. High of 300#, got down to 187#. First few years I stayed below 200 pounds...But then started to creep up...Trying things I shouldn't (Pepsi, candy, cake, fried foods, ect). I got up to about 235-237. I'm now about 217...Not great but much better than before. I'm over 10 years out.
Here are things that I did to help me to lose the weight. I cut way way back on simple carbs. We know how bad they are and they are everywhere...Birthdays, holidays, funerals, weddings. I upped my water intake and started stuffing myself with raw vegetables...Just to keep that full feeling. Also added basic protein. When I would go to the coffee shop, if I don't get a cup of soup for lunch, I would get two poached eggs...Put some breakfast salsa and pepper on them. If you are stuck doing fast food, make it Wendy's Chili. Basic things...
I also added hard exercise or work to my schedule. I use my bicycle a lot. Also work on a lot of fruit trees and grape vines (pruning, spraying, picking, getting rid of the brush), mowing weeds at the farm and home...gas push mower. Find an exercise that will fit your schedule. If you work business...Your 15 minute break or lunch time can be your walking time. I'm retired, and much of the time I will pay my utility bills by riding to the utility and paid direct (avoid the stamp)...It's not avoiding the stamp as much and getting moving.
Lastly you can cut way way back on your food intake...Still eating the right foods, but more high protein and vegetables. Go into ketosis (if you remember that taste in your mouth...Lighter fluid). Be sure you don't get dehydrated. But being in ketosis for a short period of time may kick start a diet. Brian

Just past my 10 years in October...So it's been awhile. Post op, the pain near your belly button is where they put the camera...That is why that area will be sore. Your surgery may be delayed. Ones before you may take longer. In the hospital there is a lot of hurry up and wait. Things can go real fast...or take hours. You're not going anywhere...So just wait it out. Average...About the first 4 days is moderate pain...Needing some pain pills. After that (at home) you will have discomfort more that pain. You can choose to go with Tylenol/acetaminophen or just rough it out...It's usually not too bad after the 4th day...Feels like a pulled muscle. As you have heard before...Sip, sleep, walk, repeat. Take it easy...Allow your body to heal.
The surgeon blows a lot of air during the surgery...To look for leaks. So this air gets stuck in your body cavity. It moves around your body...Maybe up to your shoulders. You may want to lay on a bed and try different movements...Moving your body slowly around to get rid of the gas. Be sure you do this slowly and do NOT disturb the wound sites. The air/gas should be gone between 10 days to two weeks. Men lose the weight (in general...No flaming me) faster than women...We have a larger muscle structure so me burn more energy. Know the signs of dehydration. You may want to look them up on line...Print it out just to be aware of. Dehydration is the # 1 reason RNY people reenter the hospital.
Try and sleep when and where you can. The hospital is hard...There is always something going on. If you have a sleep mask and ear plugs bring them...If not, then don't worry about. At the hospital and at home use pillows if necessary to help get to sleep. Take naps (healing). You may not be able to get in all your water and protein...Do your best. WHEN IN DOUBT CALL YOUR DOCTOR. They expect people to call.
I'll try and post about strictures on the RNY Forum...About 5% of RNYer get them...You might be that unlucky 1 in 20...But it is very treatable. Later, Brian

This is about ALDI and how they are affecting the grocery shopping world (Forbes). I'm in Northern California...So I may not see them for a few years. It sounds like nothing to write home about...Except for the quickness for 1 or 2 items. Also it will be interesting to see what happens when Amazon goes into the grocery business...

They are owned by the same company. I enjoy the Trader Joe's in my area, but it's about a 45 minute trip to get there. So only when I'm in that area I'll stop by. Aldi is on the East Coast and is moving west. They plan to open about 25 stores in the LA area. Just wondering what the good and the bad of Aldi is...For those of you who shop there. Thanks, Brian

A few ideas in no special order...Hot herbal tea. You could add lemon, Splenda, and milk. You might want to try beef. My first choice for beef would be Wendy's Chili. Like with any new food...Have a small taste. It has beans, beef, tomatoes and other stuff. Again...A small spoonful, chewed to puree. Then wait 10 minutes. See if the pouch is OK with it or not. If for any reason it feels strange down there STOP. WAIT!! Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Also when you are trying it you should be at home...If you get the foamies. You may want to forego the beef and just have a small amount of the beans. Good eats... Or concerning beef, you could try lean strips of beef (go very little fat). Just a taste. Beef is harder to digest than chicken, turkey, tuna, shrimp, milk, yogurt. Pork is even harder to digest. I would wait months before you test pork. Also...Nuts to you!! I keep plain nuts in my pockets to snack on. I also put raisins, banana chips, and rye crackers (from IKEA)...I use the crackers in case I feel nausea.
I always keep a can of chicken vegetable soup (pop top lid) in my car...Also a bag of nuts and the above items...crackers raisins. They go bad in the summer real fast, but can keep for months in the car during the cooler months. Brian

I hear the Boston Bruins are having open tryouts!! They need a defenseman or two. Are you ready?? Just kidding...But there is one guy on the Men's Forum that is back teaching pee wee (junior) hockey in the Midwest. And they do have many adult (no contact) hockey teams now...JUST SAYING??

I ride my bike a lot. I go to the doctors, lunch, pay my bills, bank, church, visit friends. You need a fairly light bike...And get it serviced good. Where the handle bars are located and how good (and wide) the seat is makes a difference. If you have access to a truck you can always put the bike in the back of the truck. Find a local school (elementary, junior high, high school, college) and ride around those during the weekends. If you go to Google Maps, one of the drop down tabs (menu) will show you the bike paths in your area...They are in green. It's a very handy tool. Brian PS When it is raining I will put on rock music (real loud) and make walking paths around the house...Just listen and walk. I will pick up a 2 pound weight and just move it around my body. If you don't have a weight...Find a can (or two) that would work for you...Basic-simple. No one sees me...I close the curtains so I don't look strange...

Nah...I just put out the information...But I'll sneak small pieces of dark chocolate from the freezer daily. It's better than finding something mixed with high fructose corn syrup...

Chocolate...Dark Chocolate...74% cocoa from France...I love that stuff!!

A few things in no special order. Don't test simple carbs...It is a road you don't want to go down. It's like an addict going back to "the stuff". The longer you avoid them, the better off you'll be. If you get an injury and can't exercise...Drop your calories for that period. Most people get into a food routine...But if you have stopped your exercise, you've got to look at your diet too.
Watch for emotional eating...Grazing. Things don't go well at work, family, relationships, someone gets sick or dies...All these will tempt you to go back to the old ways. Yes, there will be times when you have to go fast food or not good food choices...But try and plan ahead for these things. Keep a can of beef or chicken vegetable soup in you car...Pop top lid. I would keep a plastic bag of; plain nuts, plain Cheerios, rye crackers, raisins, banana chips in my car and truck. Hard to do in the summer, but during the other seasons it's a good idea. Enjoy the ride...Brian
