hair loss

I did get told about the possibility of hair loss, I just didn't realize the magnitude of this statement.  When I had my WLS, I had very thick long curly hair, halfway down my back... then in late October my hair started falling out by the large chunky hand fulls.  After 2 weeks, I was starting to have a hard hard time emptying my hairbrush into the trash, and I made a call to my hairdresser.  I ended up getting my hair cut - really cut.  She took 9 inches off and cut it into a wedge pageboy.  Even she (my hair dresser) was shocked at the amount lost in 2 weeks.

Since then I have started taking the Biotin 2x a day for my hair and I got the protein shampoo, etc. to work on getting my hair under control.  SO..... anyone out there have a similar experience... if so, PLEASE tell me that my hair will grow back.

It's not just a possiblity. It's more of a probability that you'll have hair loss. Amount varies with the patient. Shorter hair cuts are what most women do to help the new hair growth blend in.  IT will grow back, just be patient.  Hair loss typicall starts around 3 months and is finished at 8-9 months, with hair regrowth as soon as the hair falls out.  Go to any support group meeting, and you'll hear your story over and over. Yeah, I was told before surgery too that I would lose some hair, so I was expecting it. But expecting it and watching it was a little concerning. The good news is, it does grow back in, but like you I  got a little shorter hair cut until it did start coming in again. This is just one of the phases that we go through. So, keep your head up, it's going to be ok.

I started the Biotin during the 6 month approval process...before my surgery.
It does not help prevent or stop fall out but it really did help with the regrowth.

Nothing will stop the fall out.

It's not killing the hair follicle so there is no reason the hair won't grow back.  It's the same kind of loss you have normally but more of it.  Basically 20% more hair is falling out now so it's way more noticeable.  Google Telogen Effluvium to learn more.

I'm going through the hair loss phase, it started back in Oct. I expected it, almost anticipated it.  It is inconvenient and I have to be careful not to clog the shower drain. Buying stock in Drano...I have increased my protein intake, but I don't believe it will help much. Just going to ride this out and see what happens. Maybe my hair will grow back softer and more managable :)

I had thin hair to begin with, but in the last month or so I've noticed it's gotten so fine, too.  It's like baby hair.  Plus it's so thin up top I'm close to just getting a wig.  I just started (don't know why I waited so long) B12, biotin, inositol, gelatin caps, and Rogaine.  I don't notice as much in the shower, but still in the hairbrush breaking off.

mkbeany - Your surgery was one day after mine! Perhaps we can be supporters? I have lost over half of my volume - I ended up cutting 9 inches off from hair down my back to a bob... and even now I can see my scalp - but I'm over the rough spot of initial shock. I did know it would happen, just didn't expect that much i guess, so I'm really glad I got the cut and I am glad that this forum has cleared my fears that it won't grow back as good. Anyways - hang in there.
Would you be my friend?

A haircut was a great idea.  Rest assured that it will come back.  Don't you worry.  For now, enjoy your new look.
