X Ontarians may be approved for DS through OHIP

At least 3 of us this year have been approved to have revisions to DS with Dr. Gagner in Montreal and at least one of us has had first time WLS - DS with Dr. Hong in Hamilton. I wanted to throw this out there in case there is anyone trying for a revision or who is super morbidly obese and considering WLS.

The Duodenal Switch surgery is not new or experimental. Patient's stomachs are constructed like a VSG (just a bit bigger because you need to eat more) and then there is intestinal rearrangement to cause malabsorption. The pros are that you get to keep your pyloric valve in place, malabsorption is greater than RNY and lasts longer, it is the surgery where you can eat closest to 'normal', you can still take NSaids, you malabsorb 80% of fat intake and therefore fatty proteins are your friend! (Insert bacon here). The con of the surgery is that due to malabsorption you have to take many vitamins daily.

If you think DS could be for you, check out  http://www.dsfacts.com/ ask questions on the DS board http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/a,messageboard/ and let your doctor at the Bariatric Assessment Centre know. You can show them the illustrations of it in the large 'picture books' they have to show you the mechanics of the surgeries. You can also ask them to contact Dr. Hong or Dr. Gagner for more information.
I see progress and am hoping that the one size fits all mentality in Ontario is soon obsolete.
