Dumping....nobody deserves that!

Well it's my son's birthday.  I ate some frosting and I paid for it.  I know we're not "supposed" to be as prone to dumping but it can happen.  Big change from before when I would have downed several cupcakes.  Anyone else have dumping syndrome?

I'm still pre-surgery, but this is the first I've heard about dumping being a side effect of the sleeve. Is it pretty rare?  I sure hope it goes away, dumping sounds like it's a horrible experience.

Dumping like symptoms can happen with the sleeve but it's not common. My NUT was talking about it in our pre-surgery nutrition class, too. She mentioned they were seeing 'some' dumping with sleeve patients or, at least, dumping like symptoms. The way she talked about it made it seem pretty rare. We sometimes become lactose intolerant after surgery (generally temporary from what I've seen), so it doesn't really shock me that some of us might become sensitive to sugar.

If you haven't had a lot of sugar for a long time, you can have negative symptoms after eating sugar, but it is not necessarily dumping. It can happen even to someone who has never had surgery if they, say, go from following an Atkins plan to eating concentrated sugar (such as frosting). Your body gets accustomed to not having to fight the influx of glucose, so when you suddenly have a glucose spike again, it now causes side effects you can feel whereas it used to be the norm for your body before. It's also possible you experienced a bit of reactive hypoglycemia.

It could also be dumping, yes, but it's more unlikely. The culprit of dumping in the RNY is the bypassing of the pylorus, which we don't have. However, again, it IS possible, though rare, for even those who have never had surgery to experience dumping.

I think Jill's explanation makes sense.  Never heard of anyone dumping with the sleeve.

I'm not sure it's actually considered dumping but if I eat anything that is high concentrated sugar, I get very sick to my stomach. I really think it's because I no longer eat those things on a regular basis so I just dont think they sit well for me. Yes I do occasionally have something sweet but I know if I have more than a couple of bites, I'm not going to be feelng well. I really think this is a blessing for me because I LOVE sweets!! So I really have to stop and think if its worth putting it in my mouth and suffering the consequences. Just my 2 cents!

My symptoms were consistent with dumping.  This is gross, but the diarrhea was like pure water.  I got dizzy, nauseous, and cramped.   It's possible that it wasn't "true" dumping.  They symptoms lasted about 45 min.  I read about it and it says you can have it with a partial gastrectomy, which is basically what the sleeve is.  Anyway, I shouldn't have had that as I am a little over 2 weeks out; it was a bad decision, I'm glad I didn't vomit. It's still hard to resist temptation but that was definitely negative feed-back.

my nut told me for a snack if you have something sweet like fruit to have a protein with it,like a piece of cheese.maybe that will counter the glucose spike?
