Any docs do the Gastric Sleeve Plication?
Hey I just heard about this procedure, like the sleeve except they do not cut away your stomach they simply fold it in and suture it making it smaller. No cutting, no loss of stomach tissue, no chance for leaks or bleeeding... sounds fantastic!! The only doc I know of that does it is in Tijuana. Anyone know of any docs in the US doing this?
Thanks,
Katie

I have never heard of it before, but a google search turned up this study info (doesn't sound better than the sleeve to be honest):
57% after 36 months (11 cases). The average time of follow-up was 18 months. The mean time of operation was 98 (70-152) minutes and all of the patients were discharged from the hospital after an average of 1.3 days (range, 1-4). The main postoperative complications were permanent vomiting, intracapsular liver hematoma, hypocalcemia at early postoperative period, hepatitis, leakage at the suture line, and acute gastric perforation.

HI there - I just repied to another member on this subject, saw your question and thought I'd drop you a note too. The procedure now has more than 100 patients, and Dr. Lopez Corvala at Hospital Angeles Tijuana has more than any other surgeon. The weight loss results are much like bypass (there are now have patients that are 12 months post procedure).. The avg time in surgery with Dr. Lopez Corvala is about 60 minutes, and the technique involves no cutting or devices, so there is no risk of bleeding or leaking. There is no complication like permannet vomiting or leakage or performation experienced by Dr. Lopez Corvala - the main issue complication risk is for a hernia, or increased reflux. I suppose if a surgeon who is not expert at suturing is performing the procedure there may be some risk of sutures coming unravleled, but this does not create a problem for the patient beyond no more restriction - however this is unlikely, given the method of suturing (single suture technique with stomach invaginated, then 14 additional sutures placed).

This is not accurate information. Your employer most certainly HAS had several quite serious complications.
Plication isn't difficult to do, it's not a technically difficult procedure in the least so it doesn't require an expert to do it. It's a lot like banding, banding is the easiest surgery to do for a surgeon.
Most doctors decline to do plication because it is not effective and has more long term risks than sleeves and not great weight loss.
Can't you guys just buy an ad instead of using our boards to promote your surgeon?

The band got me to goal, the sleeve will keep me there.

I forget what it's called but there is a doctor on the east coast who does it. They do it down your throat and staple your stomach from there and make folds and make it smaller. Look it up online.
You can keep googling . It sounds really good but it's still pretty new. It does not solve the ghrelin problem. So you may have a small pouch but be starving from ghrelin..It does sound like someday that might be the surgery of choice but it will be awhile. Seaview
