A couple of question about pregnancy post vsg incl vitamins / folate??

I am almost 4 months post op, I have lost a bit over 56 pounds, which is a bit over 1/3 of the way to my goal.  I still have a long way to go to reach my goal of 150, though I am happy with my progress so far.  I have always planned to try and fall pregnant as soon as possible post op as I am almost 36 and am fully aware of the many statistics re fertility and age etc etc.  There is also a slight financial advantage to me going on maternity leave prior to 1st January 2011.  My husband and I have just this week stopped trying to prevent pregnancy and from early December will be actively trying to get pregnant.

My doctor is very happy with this plan and feels I will have a good chance of a healthy pregnancy with the weight loss I have already had and that I will continue to lose weight whilst pregnant.  In fact he says the extra demands pregnancy places on my body will possibly speed the rate of loss (whilst still factoring in additional weight from baby and fluid etc).

So I guess my first question is there anyone here who has had the sleeve and been pregnant afterwards??  Especially those who fall pregnant before goal weight?  If you fell pregnant before goal weight did you ultimately lose more weight than you gained though out your pregnancy?  Did you feel ok during pregnancy - do you think your vsg impacted how you felt and coped positively or negatively?

Finally, this might be an extremely dumb question and probably one to confirm with my doc or pharmacist.  I am taking Bariatric Advantage chewable Complete Multi Formula.  I presume this will be ok as an ante natal vitamin??  BUT my big question is I bought a special prenatal / pregnancy folate supplement, then checked my multi and saw it has more folate than the pregnancy one.  I am guessing this means I only need to take the multi which has 800mcg of folate (per the two daily tablets) compared to takoing the pregnancy one which has 500mcg??

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

First - Congratulations!  I hope you have a wonderful pregnancy :)

I would stick with the higher folate pill. I'd also add omega 3 fatty acids and probiotics.

The research is pretty clear that both baby and Mum have a safer pregnancy after wls - so Good Luck!!!!

Congrats on your progress so far!
I'm not sure about the vitamins, I'd check with your doc.
There is a pregnancy after WLS forum-you might get some good answers there-here's the link

Good luck!

I have alot of the same questions and have messaged Miki from my friends list who got pregnant immediately after surgery and had a beautiful little girl....to hopefully chime in and tell us her story and answer some of our questions.  Good Luck to you!

For whatever it is worth, you are young compared to me.  I am 41 and have to go through IVF.  Honestly, if I were you, I would wait a few more months while you are in the honeymoon phase of weight loss and lose the majority of it now, and then get pregnant and lose the rest later after pregnancy and after the weight loss would slow down naturally anyways.  Otherwise you will miss out on these easy months when the weight just drops off quickly.  Know what I mean?

Hi there. I would be the Miki that Tammy was referring to. I had my sleeve done on March 17th 2008, and much to my surprise, found out I was pregnant on April 29th 2008. I had very severe PCOS before my surgery and after failed cycles of fertility meds, thought I was never going to get pregnant on my own. My daughter is now 10 months old! Also, I'm pregnant with surprise baby #2 who will make her arrival in February.  My highest weight before surgery was 324. Day of surgery I was 288, first prenatal appt was 275, final prenatal appt 253,  3 weeks after Amelia was born I was down to 220.  I've not gained any weight with this pregnancy, but haven't really lost either.
My OB kept a close watch on my vitamin levels my whole pregnancy. The only thing I took besides my prenatal was an iron supplement, but I've always been anemic, so nothing new. But yes, you need 800 of folate. But you shouldn't need anything extra.
I had very severe all day nausea during my pregnancy and needed to eat or else I was throw up. I drank a lot of milk for good calories and tried to eat every 2 hours to get in my calories. I really had no issue. Also, baby takes everything they need, you get leftovers. It will be your health that suffers, not baby. My daughter was 6lbs 13oz and perfect!

Good luck. If you have any questions please feel free to send me a PM. I don't really look at the boards too much anymore.

Congratulations!!

Just thought it might make you feel better to know that nausea during pregancy is associated with a healthier baby and a new study came out last week showing that it is associated with a higher IQ!

So good job!

Great to hear about higher IQ! Not that I would expect anything less from my Amelia :-)

I just found out last Thursday that I am pregnant with my 8th baby and I am almost 7 mo post op.

I only had m/s with my first few pregnancies but very little m/s with my other pregnancies. My 5th child I had no m/s and his IQ is fairly high. He was reading by the age of 3. He taught himself too! We realized he could red when he kept pointing out signs and telling us what they said! LOL

I am 5wks preg today and so far I have not had much in the way of m/s. If I have I have not been able to distingui**** from normal tummy misfunctions.

I am Due in July 2010. I am 34, and my bariatric doctor has no problems with me being pregnant.

My highest weight was 326, day of surgery I was 306.6, the lowest weight I reached before finding out I was pregnant was 210.2. My goal was to get down to 150 so I lost 66% of my EW before becoming pregnant. I'm worried abou****ching the scale possibly go up again. Right now it's been stable between 212 and 210. I was really hoping to get below 200 before the end of the year but i am not holding my breath on that anymore.

I am having a difficult time finding active VSG boards for pregnancy. I'd love to hear from more post-op/post-pregnancy mom's on their experiences too.

Any ways, Good Luck with TTC. Hopfully you can join me soon on the pregnancy side of things! I feel like the lone VSG pregnant woman.
