Topic: RE: Distal bypass anyone?

Welcome to the world of distal bypasses! I love mine. I went from a size 22 to an 8 2 years ago and I'm still there today. Yes, I poop about 10-15 times a day and it smells foul but I just deal with it. I eat huge portions of food, don't exercise and still maintain my weight. You have to be diligent about your vitamins and so I wear vitamin patches rather than deal with taking 22 individual pills. I started a FB page just for distals called "distal bypass support". Feel free to join.

I had a revision from a gastric bypass to a distal bypass one year ago and lost all of my regain plus some. I started a social media group called Distal Bypass Support if anyone cares to join.

Topic: RE: Seeking help...
Carrie first off kudos to you for recognizing you have a problem and seeking help.  It's not too late to nip the regain in the bud.  You are correct when you say "Back to Basics" cuz that is the key.  Most people regain when they return to their previous habits of eating junk and slider foods.  Remember SOLID protein is the key.  I run a private OH message board for people just like yourself that either have experienced some regain or who are struggling to maintain.  We have about 25 members. If this is something you thing you'd like to be a part of, let me know and I'll send you an invite.

But in the meantime, here's some suggestions

1.  PLAN your meals.  Don't let anything happen by chance
2.  Rid your house, car, workplace, etc of junk food.
3.  Stock up on solid protein
4.  Return to using small plates
5.  Put what you think you want on your plate and then remove 1/2 of it.  Eat the first half and if 20 min later, you still want the other half, then and only then go eat it.
6.  Push the fluids-yes, that dreaded 64+ oz of water everyday.  A lot of time thirst is perceived as hunger.
7.  Exercise-Yikes, this word is even worse than "water', lol.  Everyone can do some sort of exercise, if it's only doing arm exercises while sitting in a chair, or marching in place, or walking around your backyard...just get moving.
8.  Portion your plate so it's 1/2 protein, 1/4 veggies, 1/4 carbs.
9.  LOG your food.  Write down every single bite you eat and you'll be amazed how quickly those nibbles add up to hundreds of extra calories.
10.  Forgive yourself and move on...pick yourself up, dust off and get back on that horse.

Hope this helps a little.  I rarely come to the TMB anymore because there's so little support and actual WLS advise/discussion here anymore but I'm glad I did today.  Let me know if you're interested in joining our group.

Hi, for those of you that don't know me, I run a private OH message board for people who are fighting regain.  We currently have a few openings and I thought I'd see if anyone here is needing some private support to help you lose a few pounds.

Membership requirements:  You must be at least 2 years out from your surgery and have experienced 10 or more lbs of regain.  We require that you post at least once a week and participate in our Monday Morning Weigh-in each week.  You don't have to disclose your weight in lbs if you don't feel comfortable doing that but you need to tell us if you've gained or lost from the previous week.

We have our own version of the "train" where we chat with each other on a daily basis and we also post our menu plans for the day. We are a fun group of people who are here to support each other thru the good times and bad.  If this is something you think you'd be interested in joining, please send me a private message with a little history about you and I'll get back with you shortly.

I was about to post the same thing.  He was a well respected surgeon and was loved by hundreds of friends, co-workers and patients.  He was only 55 years old and left behind a very devestated family and community.  For anyone that knew him, his facebook page has been made public for people to leave their condolences.

I applaud you for taking the steps pre-op!!  So many of us could have really benefitted from getting therapy.  There is also a fantastic book by Dr Connie Stapleton called "Eat it Up" and it's specifically designed for WLS patients.  It's a wonderful read for all pre-ops.  Call Dr Nick's office for a recommendation-they'll point you in the right direction.

You need to go with your gut.  Whichever surgery feels right for you and which Dr you trust.  You will have frequent visits before surgery but not so much afterward so I wouldn't let distance decide for me.  Personally I had a lapband and would never do it again.  I vomited daily for 2 years and nearly ruined my esophagus.  BUT, that is MY experience, not necessarily yours.  Also I'm sure your research shows that lapbands were originally designed for people who had about 60 lbs to lose-so not knowing your BMI, I can't tell you which surgery you should go with.  That decision is between you and your doctor.

I LOVE my bypass and found it very easy to lose the weight-maintaining is HARD WORK however.  No surgery is going to be the golden ticket to a "skinny healthy you"-pick one you can comply with on every level.

I take calcium, B-12, B complex, zinc, multi-vitamins, C and D.  I buy them all at either Walmart or Sam's and spend less than $5/month.  My labs have always been perfect.  Most people also need to take iron, but I never have-mine is always great.

Alissa-I just checked out the Ninja.  It's only the household blender, not the whole "system" and the reviews say it doesn't blend thing smoothly and leaves lots of chunks.  For my money, it didn't look like a great deal esp since it was refurbished and the reviews said customer service stunk.  I was bummed cuz I'm looking for a large drink machine.  Thanks for posting these things though-I always take a look cuz I never know what i can't live without.

Topic: RE: I am a newbie and surgery is next Tuesday!!!
If you weren't scared and anxious, I'd be worried.  What you're feeling is perfectly normal.  I was absolutely terrified that I'd never eat anything that tasted good ever again.  I am such a picky eater that it literally made me sick to my stomach pre-op thinking about not being able to find anything I could eat post-op.  Here I am 4 years later, went from a size 24 to an 8 and can eat basically anything I want.  I have trouble with milk products and fried greasy foods but other than that-I can eat anything.  I had sleep apnea (used a C-Pap machine for 2 years), high blood pressure and early diabetes.  All of that is gone and I am healthier than I've ever been.  I'm not telling you this to brag but hopefully to allay your fears.

The best advise I can give you is to stick to your doctor's advise and to follow your post-op diet.  By Christmas, you'll be able to eat a small portion of most of Mom's favorite things.  Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy is still one of my favorite meals.  Good luck and post any questions that you have.  We've all been there and are more than willing to hold your hand just as other's held ours.

Call your insurance company and ask for a referral or call another bariatric surgeon in the area and lie-tell them you just moved here from out of state and do they have someone they can recommend.  Good luck and I'm proud of you for seeking out professional help.  You might want to keep a food journal of everything you eat between now and then so the nutritionist and look it over and offer suggestions.

I had to pay cash.  I withdrew 11K from my 401K and have paid myself back at $300/mo for 3 years.  It was the best money I've ever spent.  Unless you've lost over 200 lbs or have incredible insurance, most don't cover it.

Pretty much all bariatric surgeon's offices offer medical credit cards such as Care One.  If you have decent credit you should be able to qualify.

Research a few docs in your area then go to their profiles on this site and see what people say about them.  The sleeve is a great surgery, good luck and I hope you find a way to make it happen.

I'm not in the Austin area (I live near Dallas) but I had a revision from a lapband to an RNY 4 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made.  I've been at goal for nearly 3 years.  I never actually lost any weight with my lapband and had it for 2 years.  If there is anything I can answer for you please feel free to ask.  Also my profile contains all the details, in case you feel like a little light reading, lol.
