How much a fill hurts: a comparison
New folks ask all the time: Does a fill hurt? And how much?
Keeping in mind that pain is a TRULY subjective subject, here is my "fill-pain" comparison for you, based on the painful things I've had to endure in my 49 years, from "Oh My God, Make it Stop!!!" to "No Big Deal at All".
[NOTE: I'm not making any of these up. They all actually happened. Remember: these are MOST to LEAST painful.]
- Cortisone injection in my wrist
- Bone marrow biopsy
- Getting hit in the face with a golf club
- Migraine headache
- Getting my finger bitten to the bone by a horse
- Getting my finger (different one) slammed in a car door
- Having my tonsils out
- Getting the tattoo that extends down to my ankle bone
- The paper cut I got all the way across my tongue when I licked an envelope
- Having blood drawn for testing
- Skinning a knee
- Getting a fill

Bette,
As often happens, you made me laugh with this one.
I often find myself responding to people who complain about the pain, trauma, and inconvenience of medical tests and procedures (people who complain about sleep studies really get to me - it's not painful - it's just one night out of your life): if that's the worst thing that ever happend to you in your life, you've had an easy life.
My MOST to LEAST painful list is:
- Migraine headache
- Breast reduction surgery
- Frozen shoulder (and subsequent surgery)
- Abdominal hysterectomy
- Inguinal hernia repair surgery
- Uterine pain when I had an IUD
- A gynecological test with a name I can't remember
- An IVP test (intravenous pyelogram)
- Tearing a fingernail off
- Slamming my finger in a door
- Having IV lines placed
- Skinning a knee
- Paper cuts
- Blood tests
- Mosquito bites
- Fills

Very interesting! Can I play?
I personally think with that first fill the anxiety is more about the fear of the unknown. I was a basket case with my first fill and as a result I tensed up too much and felt the needle much more than I ever have with subsequent fills. They have gotten easier to be calm with each fill to the point of one time I didn't even realize the doc had done it until he said OK, your can get up now! Of course, I was semi-fussing at the hubby for being too goofy in the exam room so I had my attention elsewhere.
Here's my worst to easiest list:
birthing a kidney stone
birthing a child
recuperating from incisional hernia repair
pinched sciatic nerve
arthritis pain without my NSAIDS
paper cut on nose from licking an envelope
cramps
bee sting
getting a fill
mosquito bite
