Rate of Weight Loss
RNY on 09/10/12
I'm doing research on the lapband surgery, I'm considering WLS and I'm leaning towards this method. I would like to understand better the rate of weight loss vs. gastric bypass as I hear it's very different. I need to loose 120lbs, is it realistic that I will be able to achieve this goal? Obviously I need to do my share of work with exercise and eating the right foods. I'm trying to understand how the lapband will help and the rate I can expect to loose weight...
You will notice here everyone is different. Some lose fast and others creep along. I have been pretty lucky. I have lost 27lbs since surgery 4-14-08. That is about 9lbs a month. I think 120lbs is very do-able, but you are right, it is up to you and how you eat and exercise. Even then, there are no guarantees you will lose quickly. I try to not weigh myself every day and keep a positive attitude...seems to be working
. Good luck with whatever you decide. This is a great place to get information.

Excellent, vicki! I couldn't find where I stuck this graph in my files.
I don't care about short term loss, (who of us has not had short-term loss already??) but longterm loss, and the band is superior in most studies.
We also do as well as we commit to doing. A great many people do much better than the "stats". Many lose 80-100% of excess eight in a year or two.

at goal for 4.5 yrs,
100% of excess lost

Don't be unrealistic about the rate of loss - for many it is quite slow. 1-2lbs a week is the overall average. But you cna lose as much as you want! I lost all my excess weight in under 18 months.

Highest 290, Banded - 248 Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.
Happily banded since May 2006. Regain of 28lbs 2013-14. ALL GONE!
But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,
My doctors hand outs say that with Lap Band the statistics are 40-45% of your excess weight and with RNY it is 50-55%. I think that these are hospital stats though. However, I have lost 52.2% of my excess weight in 8 months. All the pounds that I am losing now are just pure gold because I have surpassed the stats already.
I wouldn't trade the Lap Band for anything in the world...I have had absolutely no problems. I agree though, the Band is just a tool and you must eat right, exercise and get support. I am an advocate for support, whether from the internet or your support groups...it is a must.
Good luck in your decision.

The "advertised" rate to lose (one o) is 1-2 lbs per week with the lap band. I had the band last July and have lost about 93 lbs in a year. Can you lose 120 lbs? Sure you can. The benefit of the band (one of the many) is there is no "window of opportunity". From what I have always heard and read, if you haven't lost all your weight in 2 years with the bypass, you won't. With the band, if you haven't, you can get adjusted 'til you do.
