Which hospital/ER in San Francisco would I go to?

Not trying to cause alarm, but just trying to figure out what is best and which hospital(s) I should go to if this doesn't get better with my meds...

I am having severe abdominal pains identical to the ones I posted about several months ago. (www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/3910811/Spent-the-night-in-the -ER-Tests-were-inconclusive/) Feels like intense abdominal/intestinal spasms in the space between the sleeve and belly button.  Comes in waves of spasms.  Almost like contractions.  Eating and drinking make it worse.  Also feels like severe bloating, but I have been taking Gas-X in abdundance so I am positive it's not gas.

I am able to poop and pass some gas so don't think it's obstruction (wasn't obstruction last time.)  Think it may be related to the long flight last night, possibly?

Just took a promethazine (Phenergan) and am about to pop half a Demerol (only thing that makes the pain stop, it's that severe.)

Just wanted to know where I should go in the event this doesn't improve tonight.  I am staying with a friend in San Rafael in Marin county... just north of San Fran.

Edit:  I know about Rabkin, Cirangle, and Jossart but need to know which hospitals they would be making rounds at.  Don't want to be seen by a whackadoo who knows nothing about DS.

Rabkin's office is right at St Mary's in the medical building on the 3rd floor.  He also operates out of CPMC.

I would call Rabkin's office number and leave a message with his service.  They should get him a message to him.

AND NOW FOR THE CHIDING:  DSers (AND RNYers) CAN HAVE A BILIOPANCREATIC LIMB BOWEL OBSTRUCTION AND STILL BE ABLE TO POOP AND FART!!  AND YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THAT TO DOCTORS IN AN ER!!

Rabkin of course would know that, but ALL DSers should know this and know how to explain it to medical personnel.

Hi Melody...sorry you are still suffering these things!  I know by now I sound like a broken record but please keep these things in mind...when I had my large bowel obstruction I too had pain that I could not explain for quite some time before the diagnosed blockage....it was truelly the most horrible pain I have ever felt and believe me lately I am sure no stranger to pain....the obstruction topped off even child birth IMO.  Also these blockages can be very difficult to diagnose or see in many scans/tests.  Rabkin is awesome as is St. Marys...swingin critters that you get this worked out very soon!  http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/3891846/Bowel-Obstructi on-Sympton-CheckList/#31294479

Bowel Obstruction - Symptoms

The symptoms of a bowel obstruction depend on whether the blockage is in the small intestine (small-bowel obstruction) or the large intestine (large-bowel obstruction).

Small-bowel obstruction

  • Abdominal pain. Most small-bowel obstructions cause waves of cramping abdominal pain. The pain occurs around the belly button (periumbilical area). If an obstruction goes on for a while, the pain may decrease because the bowel stops contracting. Continuous severe pain in one area can mean that the blockage has cut off the bowel's blood supply. This is called a bowel strangulation and requires emergency treatment.
  • Vomiting. Small-bowel obstructions usually cause vomiting. The vomit is usually green if the obstruction is in the upper small intestine and brown if it is in the lower small intestine.
  • Elimination problems. Constipation and inability to pass gas are common signs of a bowel obstruction. However, when the bowel is partially blocked, you may have diarrhea and pass some gas. If you have a complete obstruction, you may have a bowel movement if there is stool below the obstruction.
  • Bloating. Blockages may cause bloating in the lower abdomen. You may also hear gurgling sounds coming from your belly. With a complete obstruction, your doctor may hear high-pitched sounds when listening with a stethoscope. The sounds decrease as movement of the bowel slows.

Large-bowel obstruction

  • Abdominal pain. Blockage of the large intestine usually causes abdominal pain below the belly button. The pain may vary in intensity. Severe, constant pain may mean that your intestine's blood supply has been cut off or that you have a hole in your intestine. This is a medical emergency. Call your doctor immediately.
  • Bloating. Generalized abdominal bloating usually occurs around the belly button and in the pelvic area.
  • Diarrhea or constipation. Either of these symptoms may occur, depending on how complete the obstruction is. Your stools may be thin.
  • Vomiting. This symptom is not common with a large-bowel (colonic) obstruction. If vomiting occurs, it usually happens late in the illness

Melody,
Are you doing ok?  I am about an hour outside SF if you need any help.

St Mary's ... contact Dr Rabkin.

As someone who just dealt with a bowel obstruction, you can still poop and fart when you have one ... I did.  I didn't read your other post, but did they do a CT scan to rule out the possibility of an obstruction?

My pain came in waves when it hit ... sharp, catch your  breath kind of pain, then a dull ache.

Hope it's nothing serious ... but better to get it checked out!
