My Sugar & Carb Filled Post-Op Hell

Hello fellow DS'ers. I'm 6 1/2 weeks post-op and having problems.

My first two weeks post-op went well, then I wa**** with a wave of nausea that left me unable to eat for eleven days and sent me to the hospital for four liters of fluids.

After being released from the hospital the next day, things got better and I found I could eat some foods. These are the foods I can eat;

Balance Bar Gold - Carmel Nut Blast
Bacon
Hot Dogs
Candied Walnuts
Doritos, Cheese Puffs... and other chip like products that contain protein
Licorice, Good 'n Plenty
Candy
Baked Beans
Some Soups
Popsicles
The only thing I drink is diluted Lemonade (1/3 Lemonade, 2/3 water). I can drink Hawaiian Punch, too.

That's it. The thought of all other foods/drinks turns my stomach. I just can't get it down. I could cut the carb, but then I'd simply starve. I can only handle so many bacon strips and hot dogs.

I take Zofran daily along w/ proton pump inhibitors, carafate, probiotics, fiber, and all my vitamins. However, the probiotics and fiber aren't a match for the high volume of carbs I'm eating. I'm not in pain, but it's gas and diarrhea everyday. I'm only getting about 40 grams of protein a day.

I passed by someone holding a McDonalds bag one day and had a craving for a QP w/ cheese. I was able to eat 2/3rds of it minus the top bun. I also ate some Thai Food one night (it's sweet). I do take steps in the direction of recovery like this every once and awhile. I imagine this food aversion will be a thing of the past one day, but right now it's hell.

The good news is I'm down around 40lbs. and it looks like I'm still losing some weight every week on the current diet. Sorry ladies ;)

PLease tell me this post is a joke.   You're really not eating this way are you?   Please tell me that you are going to do another post soon that says...."hah hah - I really DON'T eat this way, I'm just funnin' with you all."  Right?   If you're not joking, this is really a recipe for DS disaster.

If you are unable or unwilling to control the carbs, please at least try to up your protein intake.   Sometimes, even with an adversion, you just need to suck it up and do what you need to do.   Early on, getting in enough protein is like "taking our medicine."   You do what you gotta do to make this work.   I do hope this problem is resolved soon so that you can get back on a better eating path.

Bragging? Joke? You think I'm eating this way because I want to???

I have not chosen to adopt this diet, it is literally all I can eat. I imagine I could force down (and throw up) heathier foods, but what's the point. At present I'm waiting for the food aversions to pass so I can eat a healthy DS diet.

I'm sorry Frank - I'm a pretty understanding and tolerant person on this board, but this IS still about choices.   There are plenty of low-carb options out there, and you are choosing to wring your hands and say "I can't" rather than saying "Hmmm....what can I do to fix this?"   Once you get started on carbs, it's really really hard to turn back.  And yes, you are bragging, by saying "Sorry ladies, I'm still managing to lose whilst eating this way!"   You decide whether you can be more proactive to this.   Hell, I have a terrible, horrible adversion to dentists, because I had an awful experience with some oral surgery once, but I still go, because my health depends upon it.  Your health depends upon eating a healthier DS diet.

Then stop eating the **** and wait till you can eat more real food. You're being ******g ridiculous kiddo. The LAST thing you need right now is Hawaiian Punch and Doritos. At least eat a few pork rinds. Good Lord.

Have you tried:
--cheese, various kinds?
--deli turkey?
--deli roast beef?
--canned meats like tuna, chicken, turkey? especially done up as salad?
--egg salad?
--egg drop soup?
--miscellaneous other soups?
--cooked carrots?
--yogurt?
--cottage cheese?
--cream cheese?
--sour cream in dips?
--peanut butter?
--sugar free pudding?
--deli chicken salad?
--baked white type fish?
--shrimp?
--scallops?
--pot roast with lots of gravy?
--chili with no beans?
--spaghetti sauce with meat?
--ricotta cheese?
--chicken shredded with sauces?
--pulled pork in a very mild type of sauce?
--cooked cereal in tiny amounts?

I refuse to believe that you have tried every single one of these foods, multiple times, and yakked every one of them up.

Have you tried my Reglan plus Prilosec ****tail? For multiple days straight? In highest possible doses?

Hey, those Nacho Doritos do have 2 grams of protein per serving... ha. But yes, the carb to protein ratio is very bad. I do get that.

I'm on a Zofran/Nexium/Prilosec ****tail (in highest doses) and have tried Reglan. From what I understand Zofran is a much more powerful anti-nausea medication.

I've tried most of the foods you mention, but not all. Thanks for the list.

Datrace - isn't the variety great? The post-op DS diet seems very livable, particularly as compared to some of the other WLS procedures. I'm having surgery in about 2 months, and I'm not feeling at all worried that I'll won't be able eat good food again.

In addition to what EN posted, Lori Black also has a terrific list in her profile: www.obesityhelp.com/member/lorindablack/. Scroll down to where it says "Food after the DS".

One of my favorite ways to compare is to check out the daily threads where people post a list of what they've eaten. Here on the DS board, they are called "Food & Fitness"; over on the RNY board they are called "What are you eating/doing today?"  Here are two recent threads to check out:
