Wellington Regional Medical Center Hospital

The Wellington Surgical Weight Reduction Center

At the Wellington Surgical Weight Reduction Center, specialists work together to provide a comprehensive approach to treating morbid obesity. Services include preoperative education, psychological evaluation, dietary and nutritional counseling and individually tailored postoperative care plans. We help patients choose the best possible treatment options for their weight-loss needs.

Weight-loss surgery can be a lifesaving option for patients who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above (approximately 100 pounds overweight), or a BMI of 35 and above with obesity-related conditions such as hypertension, diabetes or sleep apnea.

The Center’s Medical Director Paul B. Wizman, MD, CM, FACS, FACMBS is board certified and fellowship trained in laparoscopic surgery and specializes in:

· Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery
· Adjustable gastric banding
· Sleeve gastrectomy
· Revisional surgeries

Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy surgery usually require a two- to three-day hospital stay and two to six weeks recovery time, depending on the type of work you do. Gastric banding requires one-day hospitalization and one to two weeks of recovery.

Postoperative care includes ongoing support groups and long-term medical follow-up.

Many weight-loss surgery patients report a significant improvement in their quality of life, experiencing higher self-esteem and self-confidence and greater energy levels. Patients are often able to discontinue medication and treatment for obesity-related conditions.
