Center for Bariatric Surgery
The Center for Bariatric Surgery at University Hospital’s Geauga Medical Center can help meet the need for effective, long-lasting weight loss for obese individuals when diet and exercise alone are not enough.
State-of-the-art surgical options, which can be performed on a minimally-invasive basis, include:
- Gastric Bypass – Works in two ways. A physical reduction in the size and capacity of the stomach so food intake is decreased and also by-passes a portion of the small intestine, thereby, decreasing absorption.
- Laparoscopic Gastric Band (Lap-Band) – An adjustable silicone band is wrapped around the
top portion of the stomach making the stomach smaller (about the size of an egg) and restricting food intake. Absorption is not altered in any way.
In addition to sustained weight loss, bariatric surgery has been shown to help reduce the risk of other health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.
The Center for Bariatric Surgery incorporates a multi-disciplinary approach involving physicians, nurses, dieticians, behavioral and physical therapists. As part of a long-term commitment to the program’s success, all surgical candidates receive pre-operative education and follow-up support from the team.
University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center offers a free information seminar about surgical weight management. The 90-minute session is held twice each month and discusses the causes and consequences of obesity, plus treatment options.
