Dr. Matthew Fitzer, Bariatric Surgeon

Matthew A. Fitzer, MD, FACS is the Director of the Virginia Bariatric Surgery Center and the highest volume bariatric surgery provider in Northern Virginia. He is licensed to practice medicine in Virginia, Nevada, Florida, and New York. He devotes 100% of his attention to the minimally invasive surgical treatment of morbid obesity. Dr. Fitzer is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and scored in the 99th percentile on the certification’s written exam. This accomplishment is limited to only the top 1% of surgeons in the United States.

Dr. Fitzer earned his B.S. in Physics at Christopher Newport University and his M.D. at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his General Surgery residency at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. He went on to complete a formal year-long fellowship in Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery at the University of Missouri, where he studied under nationally respected surgery masters Steve Eubanks, Steven Scott, Roger de la Torre, and Bruce Ramshaw.

Dr. Fitzer is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He is a published author with a book chapter focused on bariatric surgical techniques. His work has also appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals.
