About MeAlbert T. Spaw, MD, FACS Dr. Spaw is an advanced laparoscopic surgeon. He began performing and teaching advanced laparoscopic techniques over 20 years ago. He was the first surgeon in Nashville, TN to perform laparoscopic hernia repair and has taught laparoscopic techniques to surgeons all over the United States, Italy, France and Africa. Maintaining an academic foundation in his surgical practice has permitted Dr. Spaw to author several chapters in laparoscopic surgical textbooks as well as numerous medical journal articles pertaining to laparoscopic surgery. After drawing experience form some of the most skilled bariatric surgeons in the country such as Mal Fobi MD in California and Barry Fisher MD and James Atkinson MD in Nevada, and Jamie Ponce MD in Dalton, GA, Dr. Spaw refined his interests skills and limited his surgical practice solely to minimally invasive bariatric surgery. Since 2004, he has performed over 2000 weight loss procedures including Lap Band, lateral sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass, and the duodenal switch procedures. He performs surgery revisions of previous weight loss procedures to more currently effective alternatives. Dr. Spaw has distinguished himself as an Fellow of the ASMBS (American Society For Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery). He is associated with Baptist Hospital in Nashville, TN, an ASMBS Center of Excellence. He is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons and he continues to remain active on state and national levels improving the quality of care for the morbidly obese patient. Dr. Spaw served as a founding Board of Directors for the TN Chapter of the ASMBS. Dr. Spaw's primary motivation is to improve the quality of life of his patients. As an overweight child, he understands the societal pressures that over-weight people face on a daily basis.
