Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I tried to lose weight on my own struggling with diet pills, cleaning out my kitchen but still end up buying junk food to replace it. I wasn't always overweight but sometimes my family members who I wont speak of would say things like, "you can afford to miss a few meals, or you can stand to lose a little weight" well that hurt but I let it go and continue to strive but failure set in then low self-esteem.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing about being overweight is just not having the energy to do things with my family such as when we go to the amusement park, I am too big to ride the rides or when I ride the airplane I have to ask for a seatbelt extender. Another thing is that I love horses, (scared of them but love them) and I can't get on one because they require you to be a certain size/weight. On my bucket list: Riding horses, riding rides at amusement park. playing sports, enjoying life to the fullest but most of all #lovingmyself4eternity.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I will keep you posted. I have not had my surgery however, I've seen my surgeon for the first time on 5/2/13. Looking forward to setting my date sometime next month.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Self research. No special impressions to talk about at this moment.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

First letter approval!

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

It was wonderful. He encouraged me to follow the mypalfitness and special diet plan and I will be ready in about 30 days.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

Loving myself 4 eternity! Wanting another chance at life.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

Research and what the outcome is. I wanted the less invasive one. However, I chose the sleeve because of the success rate and % of the effect/complications.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

None because I believe in a higher power and believe He will keep His hands on my surgeon while I am under the knife. God is my protector and I truly believe in Phil 4:13" I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me" Let your heart not be troubled. Trust in Him in ALL thy ways and HE shall direct your path. Let Him carry you through the sinking sand. Just stand like a tree planted by the water and you shall prosper in all your adversaries! If God is for you, then who cares about anyone against you because His love is unconditional and gape.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

My Friends and family are supportive. No problem with my fiance' Solomon. He is wonderful yet I know he will not change his ways of eating because he loves RICE

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

My employer/supervisors are happy for me. They are more excited than I was when they heard the news. They even told me whatever special nursing preferences I need to let them know. We all work in the hospital!

What was it like attending your first information seminar on weight loss surgery? Were you glad you attended? if so, why?

I was not ready the first time I went which was over two years ago. This is my third time and as they say third time is a charm. I am happy I followed thru all my appointments and ready for the big day!

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

Not there yet! Will keep you posted

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Not there yet. Will keep you posted
