Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I had pretty much given up on losing weight. I had just accepted the fact that I would just be morbidly obese for the rest of my life. I had considered surgery for years but never even made the first step. Then one day I called the bariatric clinic to ask questions and before I knew it I had an appointment.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing for me about being overweight is the tiredness and lack of energy. I have a four year old who is a ball of energy and always wants me to run and play with her but I am always too tired

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I haven't had my surgery yet

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I heard about it years ago when one of my mother's friends had it. At that time, I was terrified if having surgery so it didn't even give it a thought.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

My insurance required a six months of nutrition visits and a psych evaluation before they would approve it. Once that was complete, it took 8 days to finally get the approval. I called everyday and heard it still being processed but on that 8th day I called and the lady placed me on hold. When she came back she said that it was approved. I screamed so loud. The rep started laughing. I was so excited!!!!

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

My first visit with my surgeon went smoothly. I went in a nervous wreck but once I left I was confident that I had made the right decision.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I came home from my first visit and signed up in this site and begin to read the different forums. After reading the success stories, I knew I NEEDED to do this.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

Well since I am on steroids which can slow down the healing process, my surgeon suggested the sleeve.
