Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

After my divorce I was diagnosed with Lupus and then one thing after another.I did begin the rny process in 04 in Columbia Mo but insurance and such it was was on n off again process and I just gave up after 4 yrs of that. The predisone and all the surgeries has taken a toll. Avg weight of 150. I went to 301 after i stopped smoking and radical hyst. I finally after a heart attack Jan1 2012 decided that was it I am changing n fighting to get a QUALITY of life. I had seen Dr Edwards 1.5 yrs prior on 4 hernias and he had mentioned doing the bypass when those repairs were done but once again it was a stand still with insurance and waiting on my family Dr. to send his reccomendation. But I requested to see Edwards one more time to see if things could really get moving again. So far it is a longest process ever but I am pushing harder then ever for a better life style. I pray this time it continues and not on the back burner.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

being able to keep up with my grand kids I had no air playing with them My bones hurt caring the weight The numbness n tingling between shoulder blades My self esteem - the more weight i packed on the more i became a hermit

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

not had surgery

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Columbia Hops I went to a meeting discussing it, my BMI was too low to qualify. Then I had a appointment 5 yrs later with Edwards over hernias and he suggested a bariatric surgery and i wouldn't have so many meds ect so I attended a meeting the following Tuesday eve. a yr later and i was about to give up when Mary called and finally got the letter from my family Dr to approve so i saw dr Edwards again and now one yr later i have a surgery date of Aug 13th 2012

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

there is no price for being healthy. so sacrifice i believe comes along with it and the staff at Mercy are so easy to work with and know how to work with the insurance companies

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

I had a list of questions. Mostly about the hernias......and to be told i was morbidly obese...was a shocker

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

when I couldn't stand the joint pain and ran out of breath so easy playing with grand kids and a heart attack on January1st

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

I really did not decide. I allowed Dr the dr to make a choice as to what would benefit me most in the long run as most my family is diabetic and i do not wish to be insulin dependandt

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

i do not have those fears, all is up to God not man.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

No one really gave a answer..........

What was it like attending your first information seminar on weight loss surgery? Were you glad you attended? if so, why?

i was very curios and it was nice to have so many questions in my mind put to ease
