Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I would graze all day, not realizing or really caring about how much I ate. I ate when I was hungry, bored, tired, happy, sad, mad.....you get the point. I didn't even have to necessarily be hungry. If I knew I had food, particularly junk food, I would eat it in enormous quantities. I had absolutely no willpower, which explains why I failed the numerous diets I attempted. I gained about 65-70 pounds between my freshmen and senior year of college. One day I got on the scale out of curiosity and when it said 319, I was ready to cry. And once I was diagnosed with both high blood pressure and diabetes at only 21, I knew I had to make a drastic change in my life before I ate myself to death.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing about being overweight was feeling unhappy and uncomfortable in my own skin. Seeing myself every morning and hating every single inch of my body. Going to an amusement park and not fitting into the roller coaster--in front of everybody.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I enjoy shopping now. The outfits that I try on actually look the way I pictured it in my head. I love that I have come out of my shell and have truly begun to love life. I l really love how I now shop in the juniors section rather than plus size.
