Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I ate just to be eating with out really realizing it. i tried to do slim fast but it didn't work so i would cry and then eat. tried alot of different diet but nothing ever worked then i would cry and use food for the comfort.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

being out of breath, being tired, and worrying about my son and what he thought of it.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

walk and run with my kids keep up!

i found out about it 4 years ago but thought it was not for me. i started working for the hopital and i work that floor so i learned alot. thats what change my mind.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

it took a year. i went threw my secondary insurance because my first would not cover it unless id been where i was for 3 years i thought what a crock i pay for it. so i got lucky and medicaid paid for it. waiting for approval is the worst.

it was great he told me everyhting i needed to know.

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

the fact that i couldn't get out of bed with out a fight and i was always so tired. i kept working more jobs because i thought i was being lazy and then i was told i had sleep apena so i needed it.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

i talked to the doc about it.

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

i was scared to leave my children behind with noone to take care of them..i did get over it though because i see the doc i went to everyday because i work with him i just knew id be fine..your more at risk when your much much heavier..but the doc's have a servival rate higher then deaths.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

everyone was great i do have a few people that think i did not make the right choice but i still feel i did and they do support me just make it heard.

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

i have been out for 3 weeks i get to go back next week so i'll be aout about 3 1/2 weeks not to bad.. my employer was fine with it wanted to make sure i had everything i needed and they are the ones who took care of me right after.
