Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

Food is basically my drug of choice. I have used it to try to mend every ounce of guilt, anger or sadness I've ever had. I have always turned to food for comfort. I have been overweight my whole life. With brief moments of losing enough to feel fantastic. Only to gain it all back.. (Apparently I'm not worthy of feeling fantastic.)

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I've always thought the worst thing is...not being able to do things "skinny" people did. Now I realize that isn't the worst. Now I understand the worst thing is that I haven't loved myself enough to make the change.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Waiting on insurance approval

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I had never thought I would consider bariatric surgery. One day my good friend mentioned she was going to a bariatric surgery seminar. I didn't even think about it, I just jumped right in and asked if I could join her. Partly to support her, but I was very curious if this might work for me. Loved the amount of info I was given.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I'm waiting on insurance approval now. I thought the 6 month waiting period would be so hard, but it really wasn't. It went so fast. My advice would be to do exactly what they tell you to do. If they say lose 10 pounds....lose 12.
