Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have always had a few extra pounds which did not show much because I am tall.Over the course of the last 10years I have put on a great deal of weight.I am 85lbs overweight.I have tried everything from weight watchers, sensa, medifast, the hcg diet and last the serotonin weight loss diet.I always started out good but never stayed on track. My sister had the vertical sleeve last april and has lost 100lbs.My younger sister had the route n y in October and has lost 95lbs.Overweight has been an ongoing issue with almost all of my family.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Getting dressed is the worst thing about being overweight.I feel lousy, my clothes do not fit and all my joints ache.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I am scheduled for surgery on march 22nd.As excited as I am I am terrified as well.I keep thinking to myself I can do this without surgery. Are these feelings normal? Other family members are trying to talk me out of it.Why? 2 sisters are having great sucess with it.I am just scared I guess

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

In August of 2010 my sister confided in me that she was going to have it done.I didn't know much about the surgery so watched and researched as she went thru the process.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

It takes around 6months from your first appt. to insurance approval.Have everything ready that insurance requires.Once I completed my last nutrition appt. I had an answer in 2 days.My bmi is 35 and I have minor co morbiditeies so was thrilled when they said yes

What was your first visit with your surgeon like? How can people get the most out of this meeting?

Do your research before your appointment.Ask alot of questions. My surgeon was wonderful.I was at ease largely in part because I was informed

What made you finally decide to have the surgery?

I tried to diet during the 6 month journey to approval and I still weigh the same. Also, everyday I get to see the wonderful ways it has changed the lives of my 2 sisters.I read something on the surgery everyday.I want to get this part of my life under control.

How did you decide which proceedure to have?

I have a hiatal hernia, with the route n y it can be corrected

What fears did you have about having complications or even dying from from the surgery, and what would you tell other people having the same fears now?

I am fearful of the surgery.I think because it is elective.I also worry about complications.I tell myself that being 85lbs overweight is dangerous as well.

How did your family and friends react to your decision? Would you have communicated anything differently if you could now? How supportive were they after your surgery?

When i mentioned it to my family and friends all(except the 2 sisters who had the surgery) tried to talk me out of it, saying I did not need to do it.I am tall so i dont think they realize how overweight I am.I am scheduled for March 22nd and only my husband and 2 sisters know.I am having enough with my emotions, I do not want to deal with others opinions.

How did your employer/supervisor react to your decision? What did you tell him/her? How long were you out of work?

I said I would be out for 4 weeks.(I do alot of heavy lifting). They dont ask questions and that is it.

What was it like attending your first information seminar on weight loss surgery? Were you glad you attended? if so, why?

It was exciting.I felt like this was going to be the change I need in my life.It was very informative.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My sister said to bring my own pillow.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?
