Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I have been overweight my entire life. Being originally from the Dominican Republic, being overweight was specially difficult cause family made sure to let me know how "fat" I was, didn't matter if I was a size 11 (when i was 13) or a size 16 (15) or a size 18 (when I was 20, and so on. Once I reached size 18, I only got under that when I was 24 that I got into exercising just because I was dating someone who later became my husband, who is now my ex-husband. After marrying him, it turned out that he was a very controlling man, and my only way of dealing with it was food... in less than 6 months I put on 40lbs, and by the time we separated for good, I gained about 70lbs, which gave me an all time scale number of 270 lbs, a year later I got laid off and lost my apartment, and since I've fluctuated between 270 & 285. But this last year 2011 was the worst, I actually reached an all time high of 303 lbs, and was diagnosed diabetic, I ended up in the hospital for a week because of it, and that was my decision maker. Once I was in the hospital I knew that there was on way around it, I had to have WLS. So I decided to go for the Gastric Bypass. On Feb. 15, 2012 I had my surgery. The process is harder than I thought. But I'm positive and I am committed to make this a life time transformation.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Not feeling the desire to go every where you'd want to go, cause though you can go, you know that deep inside you'll feel bad and inadequate.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I just had my surgery about 9 days ago (2/15/2012) Cant answer this question just yet! But I will!!
