Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was a very emotional eater.....I ate if I was happy, sad, angry, depressed, it didn't matter. I also had to eat everything on the plate. I hated to waste food.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I couldn't keep up with my family....even walking across the street had me out of breath. Walking the mall - it was a good thing they had benches every couple of hundred feet or I never would have made it.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I had my surgery on October 15, 2010. I am now down 130 pounds (with about 30-35 pounds left to go). There is so much more that I enjoy doing now that I should make a list of things I don't enjoy doing as it would probably be shorter. Clothes shopping is no longer the struggle it used to be. I don't have to shop in the PLUS sized stores any longer. My first dress from Suzy Sheer made me cry with happiness. I feel "sexy" for the first time in 20 some odd years. I love to walk now. When we are out for walks, my husband now has to tell me to slow down. I actually enjoy cleaning the house as I now have more energy. I can spend quality time with my daughter (who is 13) and now have energy to look after (I should say chase after) my son's one year old daughter. Life is good. My surgery was an ordeal as I did have complications; however, if I had to do it over again I wouldn't change a thing.
