Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I battled obesity and being addicted to food for over 10 years. I was on an emotional as well as a physical roller coaster. I ate when I felt good, sad, mad, just any emotion provoked an eating response.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing for me was loosing my health, my self-confidence and my desire to live. I actually got to the point that it didnt really matter if I woke up in the mornings because I didnt really have a life, I only existed.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Exersizing at the fitness center, going to Dollywood and riding rides being able to fit the Roller coaster seats, walking for hours without tiring, just living a healthy happy normal life.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I was at CAMC Womens and Childrens hospital in Charleston. THey provided excellent care. They even had a special wing for the bariatric patiens which was wonderful. I wish I would have brought chapstick.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

I had a incision that got infected. I am a nurse so it was not a major issue for me. A small price to pay for the health and happiness I have achieved.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I had a post op incisional infection. I still felt blessed to have been able to get this surgery. It was very hard the first six weeks though, this surgery is not just a quick easy fix. It takes dedication to yourself and a will to get better. I was worth the effort. When I got to feeling anxious or even worse like I wanted to eat things I shouldnt I would walk. It helped tremendoulsy.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I am a member of obesityhelp.com, the people have helped me find good protein drinks and bars, wonderful recipes that are WLS friendly. I have met literally hundreds of people who have been there and understand. It has been very important in my success, it has helped me understand and given me a will to do good.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have 6 small scars. It is exactly what I expected. Again only a small price to pay for the health and happiness I have gained.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have had a couple of plateaus but I really dont get to upset. These are to be expected and if you freak out and start straying from your plan you are only sabbotaging your own success.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes but honestly I think it is because I am more outgoing and friendly myself.
