Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

many years of diets and weight loss programs

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The simple things that became hard to do, like tie my shoes. To go for walks. I would no longer swim at a lake or pool. The way people view you as a person.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I can wear a shirt that I couldn't wear not long ago.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

Many years ago a women I had worked with had it done. But I wanted to wait until it had been done for many years and I felt that technology had made improvements before I was going to have it done.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

We had a storage closet in our room and the nurse's were in and out all night. The nurses were rude for the most part. They were also slow at taking care of your needs.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Yes, I'm alergic to just about any kind of pain medications and I wasn't waking up after the surgery. The second day they were talking about putting me in ICU but thanks to my daughter she had them cut back on the pain medicine three different times and I started to wakeup.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

Lost alot of sleep. It is such a long wait and it was even longer after I had my surgery date.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

At this time I'm not going to any.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

They're are six in total. Three look pretty good, but there are two that look a little ruff but they are about an inch long. One of the circle ones looks like it is trying to get infected but I'm taking care of that. In time I'm sure they will look much better.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

none as of yet.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

No, I've only lost twenty-pounds so far.
