Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I woke up dreading each day because I was profoundly overweight. It pained me to do the simplest tasks. The physical and psychological burdens were equal.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing was not being able to move or walk without pain or shortness of breath.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I feel more confidentin all aspects of life.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I read Carnie Wilson's book, Gut Feelings. I related to her story in so many ways that I knew it was for me.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My hospital stay was mostly pleasant. I couldn't sleep well, and found it most comfortable to spend my time in a chair. I had a very unpleasant experience with one of the nurses, but, beyond that, I was out in 2 and 1/2 days!

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications whatsoever!!

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I couldn't wait! I had to wait two extra months to accomodate my employer. But the day finally arrived, and I survived!

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

The best support has been my new husband, John. My dad was the only one out of my family who helped me. No one visited me in the hospital. I will always remember and be thankful for what my dad did.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scar is a lot bigger than I expected. A woman at pre-consult lied about it. I should not have paid much attention to her, as she was not a medical professional. But the scar is fading, and I'm hoping to get it lazered off.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

It seems like after a big weight loss, for a few months I won't go anywhere. Then, all of a sudden, I'm losing weight left and right....amazing!

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes.... I have 19-year-olds checking me out!!Scary!
