Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My weight loss battle was difficult. I can't say that I was depressed or lonely because I wasn't. However, when I started to feel discouraged I felt as if I was by myself but when I spoke to family and friends they understood.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst part of being overweight was not being able to do things you done before. OR eventhough you could it took alot out of you to keep up with others.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I enjoy walking without pain.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I first found out about WLS through a web site and initially I didn't want to do it. I hate to admit this but a part of me thought it was an easy way out, or my weight wasn't that bad.

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

My experience was acutally very good, I got approved first time out. To give any advice is to do exactly what you doctor tell you to.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay was as comfortable as it could be given the pain. I was there for two days. The most important things was having helpful nurses on staff at all times. Also my doctor making visits even in the middle of the nite to check on me.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

Thankfully I have not had any kinds of complications.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

At first I was totally exicted about having my date and being approved. It was sort of a surreal feeling as if I knew it was going to happen but then it was like a wow factor. I just kept my eye on the idea this will make my life much better.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

For me there was minor pain and discomfort. However, it was not as bad as I thought it would be. THey should expect minor pain and discomfort, although everyone is different.

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I have my family, my doctor and everyone at the office. I also have made some friends from my stay in the hospital.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I had laprospoic so my scars are minor. I have 5 small scars. NO it's actually better than I thought they would be.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Yes some people look at me different, especially the ones who has no idea I had WLS.
