Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was an emotional eater. Whenever I was upset, I went right to the refrigerator or cabinet!

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Lack of self confidence. I hated the way I looked in clothes.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I enjoy being able to fit into a size 24. I know that I still have a very long way to go but I used to be a size 30-32 and that was tight on me.

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I learned about the lap-band from TV commercials and then found out one of the people I knew from work had had it done at Hackensack Hospital. I went to a seminar and was so very impressed with all 3 surgeons. But the one that impressed me the most was Dr Ewing. He is an amazing man, very kind and empathetic. He answered all my questions, and never once seemed annoyed at how many I had!

Describe your experience with getting insurance approval for surgery. What advice, if any, do you have for other people in this stage?

I was very lucky, I had Oxford at the time and they approved it right away.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

I was so incredibly impressed with the entire staff at Hackensack Hospital. From the moment I entered until the hospital until I left, I felt that I could ask anyone for or about anything. Everyone had a smile on their faces, even the cleaning people! I was there overnight. they supplied everything, even gave you a little overnight case which contains comb, shampoo body wash, toothbrush and mouthwash.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

No complications.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I think I am very lucky. I had no post operative anxiety. I had my surgery 4 days before Easter and had a house full of company. I think that was the hardest part. But in the end it was also the most rewarding.

Describe your first few weeks home from the hospital. What should people expect from this period?

My stomach was a little sore. It took a little while to get used to eating SLOWLY and drink all the fluids they wanted us to.

How far did you travel to have your surgery? (If far, how did this affect your aftercare?)

about 20 miles. I found it difficult to get to have my band tightened

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

I didn't have a support group and I think I should have joined the one provided by the hospital. I think it would have made it so much easier.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

very minimal. It is barely noticable.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I have lost 80 pounds in the last 3 years. I would definitely have lost more if I had continued to go and have my band tightened.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Not really.
