Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was depressed alot, and did'nt want to go out into the public any more than I had to. I was tired all the time and anything I did was a big efford. It took so much energy out of me. My feet and ankles would swell regularly. I had a hard time putting my socks and shoes on. And last But not the least was I have sleep Apnea and require a CPAP machine to sleep with.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Everything I did was a real effort . I did'nt have the energy to enjoy life. I would have to park as close to the door ,as possible when shopping as I would be out of breath walking very far. I was bullied and called names when I was young, I did'nt have many friends and always felt alone. After I got married and hadn't children I gained even more! But desided to diet, well I tried several diet only to loose and then gain even more. I felt I was hopeless ,& my self esteem was much to be desired. Finally I read about the rouge and Y , gastric bypass Surgury. After going to a conference about this surgery ,I decided at 55 to regain the life I always wanted. So in Oct/2009 I had my Surgury. What a life saver it has been for me! I lost a total of 163LBS!

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I Really Enjoy being able to walk, and now I can put on my socks and shoes without trouble. Feels great!!! This year August 2012 I went on vacation to Picton Sand Banks,Picton Ontario with my son and his family. My 4 year old Granddaughter ask me to go in the water, and swim with her and her 7 year old brother , then run up the sand dunes with her and roll down them ! We did just that! Well before 2009 and my Surgury I would not be seen in a bathing suit, and would not of had the energy to walk up the dunes little lone run up them. Boy I have created great memories for my grandchildren and myself. I have lots of friends now ,and feel great about myself. Thanks to my Successful Rouge N Y surgery !

We have a Ottawa support group who meets once amonth, but I also travel to Brockville which is about 3/4 hr drive to a once a month coffie support group. Support groups are very Important, as We need support and many Questions answered by those who have already had there surgerys. Also Obesity help.com is great, to look up any Questions we may have. No Question is foolish as any Questions you may have someone else knows the answer.Just post the Questions and check back daily for answers.

My scars are small as I applied Vitamen E to them nightly after the first week and they are pretty much faded out.
