Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My life was like a yo-yo, like many of us who are overweight and hate it. In the 1950's, when I was a little fat girl, my mother would chastise me for eating, I thought she hated me because I was fat even though she is the one who made me that way. She gave me diet pills (real diet pills) at age 12 before High School so I could fit into the uniform and one day I passed out. I did every diet there is. I would lose weight, go off the diet and gain it back. I kept taking the diet pills and met a guy who turned me on to the abuse effects of the diet pills and I was off to the races, first diet pills, then crystal meth intravenously. By this time, I didn't care how fat or skinny I was.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing I can remember about being overweight was when I was a teen, my mother told me if I didn't lose weight, no one would ask me to the prom. Her words came true. No one did ask me to the prom. I was crushed and my life of devastation began.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I am six years out now and I enjoy being able to play with my granddaughters on the floor. Going from 240 lbs to 103 lbs is a big change. The other thing I enjoy is shopping for clothes in the normal size. Sometimes, I have to go into the Juniors or Girls sizes. I am a Medical Transcriptionist and work from home and the note I just transcribed about an obese patient who just cannot lose the weight at 70 lbs overweight prompted me to write this short story because I am so grateful to be way on the other side of obesity. Those of you who have been successful for a number of years know what I mean, I guess.
