Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

My emotional battle with weight control was horrific. My overeating made me dislike myself totally. i felt like there was no hope for me because I used food to cope with emotional problems

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

The worst thing for me being overweight was being tired all of the time. I was also depressed and lonely.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I really love being able to see my toes!!!!!!!! i love being able to sit in a chair and not spill out on the sides. i also love being able to drive and put a soda in between my legs. I always loved shopping but now i can keep goin and goin and goin. I absolutely love getting my menstraul cycle each month!!!!!!!!!!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

I read an article in People magazine about Carnie Wilson and her success. My inital impression was gosh i wish my insurance would cover it. I really believed that wls surgery would save me from killing myself(with food)

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay at Columbia Hospital for women was a pleasant stay. The nurses in the ICU Unit were very very attentive and patient. In the room my nursung staff was wonderful. I was in the hospital for 3 days.

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

i did not have any complications after my surgery

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

After I got my surgery date, I could not wait. I wasn't nervous at all because I prayed for the surgery so I believed that the surgery was for me. I literally stayed on obesity help all day at work and read story after story(good and bad)

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

My doctors office offers a weekly support group. This group is very helpful. it gives you a chance to meet other individuals who can share your happiness and understand when you are down. The group is also very informative. I believe that one should attend the group sessions so they can get a feel of what could happen to them.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

My scar is awesome!!!!!!!!! I expected the scar to be very long. The scar is about 3 to 4 inches long. Very slim and looks like some of my stretch marks(lol)

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I never really hit a plateau until i went on a peanut craze as well as starbucks craze. i broke the plateau by living to my mantra(protein, water, exercise and prayer)

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

Definitely!!!! People are very attentive to me now. I get excellent service when I am out in public. i don't get the rude stars anymore. Although my coworkers treat my differently (not all good) some people try to insinuate that you have changed. Although physically I have changed i am still meaka on the inside,
