Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I ate when I was depressed, bored, happy you name it I ate! I sat on the couch and thought about what I could eat next instead of getting up and motivating. I hated lookin in the mirror and trying on new clothes or old ones for that matter. Nothing fit me and I'd go straight to the fridge and eat more....like that was goin to help me. I've been heavy all my life and I decided to finally do something about it.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

Clothes not fitting and my husband not being able to put his arms around me.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

Getting into the clothes I couldnt and seeing the look of DAMN on my husbands face!

How did you first find out about bariatric surgery and what were your initial impressions of it?

My mother has wanted to have it done and I have family members that have had it done. I was all for the surgery after watching a tape from my surgeon and his staff. My husband was worried about it but later on agreed it would be the best for me.

What was your stay in the hospital like? How long where you there? What things are most important to bring?

My stay at the Hospital was good I only had one nurse that I didnt really care for and she was covering for someone else. I was there for 2 days total. Shampoo, conditioner, soap are the most important things to bring! The hospitals stuff is not that great!

Did you have any complications from the surgery? If so, how did you deal with them?

After surgery I was vomiting a little bit due to the anesthesia. I had to keep the tube in my nose for a while and that was SOOOO miserable but once it came out I was fine other than being sore.

In the weeks after you got your surgery date, how did you feel? How did you cope with any anxiety you might have felt?

I felt pretty good other than the soreness and the itching from the staples. Anxiety...I cried I felt left out at dinner time with my family ..all I could have was slimfast for 2 weeks.I got over it tho!

What aftercare support group/program do you have? How helpful/important is this?

The Staple Line club meets once a month at Doctors Hospital. However, I live 2hrs away so I have'nt been. My husband an kids give me all the support I need.

What is your scar like? Is this what you expected?

I have five small incisions one between my breasts, one on each side under my breasts, one above my belly button and one more on my left side. They're still red but will fade over time and shrink up.

Please describe any plateau experiences you have had since surgery.

I'm only a month out so I havent had one yet.

Do you notice people treating you any differently now?

I have noticed men looking at me now. I never noticed it before altho my husband did lol It makes me feel good but, it also bothers me in a way. If you want to look fine but dont stare!
